Parents of kids in Greek Life, who pays

Anonymous
It will vary but school and Greek house. Plus the first semester is always more due to one time fees like badge fees, initiation etc. My DS’s frat is about $500 per semester and my dd’s sorority is about $800 for live out. The sorority does include one meal per week.

For social dues alone, this seems to vary widely by school and by fraternity/sorority, anywhere from a few hundred per yr to 2k/semester or more.

A friend of my daughter is going to Alabama and her sorority dues are 9K per semester freshman year!

SO and I were GDIs at school so we pay nothing towards Greek Life. Kid’s 40 hour a week job is to get the grades to keep merit aid and graduate in four years. Any extra curricular activity is on them.

To all the parents footing the bill "because she's a student," would you be willing to pay that for her to pursue an interest in motorcycle biking clubs? How about her interest in late-night raves?

It seems like it would matter whether the parents were members of Greek houses themselves, back in the day. For parents who sneered at that when they were students, I doubt many would agree to spend their hard-earned money on such rubbish now.

What's your point? I pay for a mountain biking and skydiving club also...you are not witty nor intellectually or morally superior so have a seat.

Is your child planning to go into a lucrative field so that one day she can pay for these extra curriculars herself?

Caveat that my college kid isn’t in Greek Life and it’s very hard to see my HS kid rushing. If one did I’d certainly cover the cost up to what the college charges for room and board for a kid who lives in/ eats in. I’d probably agree to pay half of dues as a Christmas/birthday gift. Extras on them.

The “pay half the cost for your birthday gift” is what’s on the table for DS’s Ultimate Frisbee league.

None of your business, parent your kid and I will parent mine. You may believe you are making some wise point on an anonymous board but you are only stroking your own ego. I have no compunction to be influenced by whatever life lesson that you believe to be espousing so don't waste your time.

It looks like that includes housing and food. However, most freshmen don't live in the house, so I'm thinking you might have the yearly total, not the semester.

It is correct that it varies greatly by school and chapter. Also depends on whether or not the house is paid for. Dues are higher when there is still a mortgage to pay!

We do. We pay all college related costs.

"We pay all college related costs."

Not trying to be snarky, for real. How exactly do you see this as related to college? I'd pay for things like a flight to Chicago with her college debate team. Or a season ski pass for a kid at a school where that's the main fun activity. If they need a new trumpet for marching band, sure. I'd help with gas and other incidentals if she and her club were going to do volunteer work, like build trails in a park, for the weekend. The kids doing those activities are having lots of fun socializing together and hanging out while doing their activity. But what's the activity of a sorority? I'd be pissed off that my kid was purposely buying a different outfit that had been designated by the sorority leadership each week. I live right by one of our local DMV universities so every week I see the young women pouring out onto the street wearing the "uniform" for that weekend. Once it was cheerleader skirts with a tube top, all in the school colors. Last week it was high rise light wash jeans with a pastel cropped tank top and hair in a high ponytail. Sometimes it's all black, or ruffled blouses with short shorts. When I first moved here I thought maybe everyone was just shopping at the same store or something. LOL!

You have thought a lot about this.

My DD is in a sorority and in no way is she required to buy the outfit of the week. She does buy different outfits for theme parties but she pays for that herself.

Also not only is she not required, it has never been a thing where she is.
