OP - thank you for your berry strategy! Sometimes the simplest thing is a great gift to another. Thanks!

Why would you wash berries if you're not going to eat them right away? Why are you surprised the residual puddle of water will make them soggy and mold quicker.

+100!

With all the highly educated people in this area, I'm surprised by the lack of common sense.

Me too. This is all ridiculous.

Like I said, it’s not rocket science. But I like berries and I wanted to eat a few every day. But that wasn’t happening. I was eating half and then the rest would have gone bad by that time. So now, I eat all the berries I buy. I always knew what the solution was, but I was fighting it. Now I’ve given in and all is well. I look forward to grocery day because I get to gorge on berries.

It doesn’t ever take you a little while to make the right choice for you? People make bad choices all the time about things far more important than berries, when they should know better.

Anyway, I thought I would share and it sounds like it helped at least one person upthread.

You really didn’t know that it was a bad idea to wash delicate berries before putting them in the fridge for extended periods of time?

Of course, if a kid NEEDS a banana for a snack, I’m not going to say no, the kiwis need to be eaten first. But generally I try to serve it in this order.

We do too but my sister thinks this is ridiculous (probably cheap). She just wants to follow her mood that day even if it means tossing lots of food. My mood for a particular fruit is rarely that strong.

I have found kiwis to last a shockingly long time in the fridge-- like a couple of weeks (sometimes more).

Don't. They need to be dry, and if they're slightly dirty, it doesn't matter at all. Adding moisture days before you eat them isn't going to help with texture, taste or mold development.

Wash berries right before eating.

This is what I’ve always done and berries last close to a week. When it’s time to eat I grab a handful and rinse them.

Raspberries, I will say, are the exception and I eat those quickly or really, I just rarely buy them.

I envy all of you who can keep blackberries for more than a day. I swear we eat so. many. blackberries. I go to the store a couple times a week for that.

I stopped buying berries because they are SO expensive right now. I can’t justify it any longer.

If you shop around you can usually find blueberries and strawberries for a "reasonable" price.

I get berries from whole foods or costco and they keep 5 days. I bring them home, wash all of them with TJ fruit and vegetable was when we use them for the first time, cut them up and put them in a food saver box. The only ones that dont keep >3 days are raspberries.

If I pick them up Saturday they are usually gone by Wed anyways but might be good Thursday too.

If I buy berries from Aldi, HT, etc. they are bad in 2 days max.

PP here…not yet. A few more weeks maybe? Yesterday’s shop the tiny clamshells were minimum $5 for all types. I pound of strawberries was more! I do have some black raspberry bushes planted, they’ll be getting some extra love and attention for sure.

I know. Reading DCUM, sometimes you wonder how these people manage to function.

NP. For me berries have always been very expensive and when I rarely splurged, a treat I preferred to savor. That’s why I would try to make them last the week.
