My new berry strategy

Anonymous
This is not rocket science but I have finally accepted that berries don’t last through the week. We have started to eat them
The day or two after they are bought. We eat those before moving to the sturdier oranges and apples. The vinegar washing was a pain and I wasn’t always the one there to unload groceries. Putting them in the fridge made them gross. I used to throw away so many. I’m accepting berries for what they are and I’m much happier!

Vinegar washing?

We buy our berries at Whole Foods, so they're generally very fresh, and they last through the week in the fridge. Refrigeration makes fruit taste sweeter and keeps them fresh longer.

Clean your fridge and close all the containers there. In a fridge environment, some foods absorb odors and tastes from other more pungent foods.

And no vinegar washing, you silly billy.

Were you washing your berries in advance?

Don't. They need to be dry, and if they're slightly dirty, it doesn't matter at all. Adding moisture days before you eat them isn't going to help with texture, taste or mold development.

Wash berries right before eating.

I have resorted to buying frozen ones. We threw too many away when we bought them fresh. We are trying not to waste so much.

Don’t wash them until you actually eat them.

+1

I decided to go with frozen as well.

Same strategy here. Eat the more delicate fruit first.

Why did everything need a strategy? Y'all can't figure out to eat raspberries before apples????

I know. Reading DCUM, sometimes you wonder how these people manage to function.

The blackberries and raspberries I get always last for a week. Strawberries are more fragile and blueberries can last even longer. We only rinse them right before eating.

We generally try to eat them in order as well: berries, kiwi, melons, bananas, apples/oranges.

Of course, if a kid NEEDS a banana for a snack, I’m not going to say no, the kiwis need to be eaten first. But generally I try to serve it in this order.

+1 frozen is cheaper and I throw them into smoothies so frozen is better that way. I only buy fresh if they’re in season.

+100!

With all the highly educated people in this area, I'm surprised by the lack of common sense.
