Why do so many kids attend public schools out of state?

It frustrates me so much to see MD kids say that. My VA would love to go to UMD but $$$$ (if she could even get in).

Some families have sold their kids on their notion that if you can't gain admission to the in-state jewels, then OOS colleges are better. For example, I know one who chose Ole Miss over CNU. Sure Ole Miss has a bigger name nationally due to its sports programs, but there is no way Ole Miss is worth an OOS premium. But for some, familiar college names matter.

Because you can't get into your top state schools.

It has become really hard to get into UVA, W&M and engineering at VT.

Yes, true. But I can't think of any good reason to go to Clemson.

Maybe their parents went there and they grew up loving the school?

Virginia schools are more expensive than you might realize (they’re more expensive than I realized, anyway). And not just William and Mary.

Probably because they did not get into UVA, VT, W&M, UMD, etc.

But why not just go to a private school then?

There are some schools like Berkeley or UCLA that I can understand. I’m talking about pretty average schools like University of Delaware. And I do know Penn State is a great public school. I have many friends who went to Penn StAte, Rutgers, SUNY and UMass but they all went as in state.

I'm guessing your kids have not applied to college yet. You will see.

Where would you suggest instead?

Right the OOS tuition for out of state schools is lower than some in-state for VA schools.

Certain state schools have more racial diversity than privates and that was important to my kids.

depends on the kid's stats. You need to be realistic.

This.

Have you looked at some of the results on this board? On the VT waitlist thread someone whose kid had a 4.2 GPA and 1500+ (sorry, I can't remember the exact score) SAT did not get into VT.
What's a 3.8 1400 SAT student going to do?

Also some kid's don't want to stay in state. Some want to go to a specific part of the country.

1. Family doesn't care about the cost and the kids go wherever they want for whatever reason.
2. Family cares a lot about costs and OOS with scholarship came cheaper
2a. Didn't get into the school of choice in state, and the OOS sweetened the deal with a scholarship.

Was Ole Miss going to give your friend's kid a lot of scholarship money?
Does CNU have the major your friend's kid wanted? And even if they do, what if your friend's kid decided to change majors? Ole Miss is more likely to have it.

And yeah--name recognition is important. Go to anywhere in the country, or even out of the country and tell people you went to Ole Miss--they will know what you are talking about.

Go anywhere outside of Virginia, or hell even within Virginia, and tell people you went to CNU. They'll tell you they never heard of it.
