Is the US a direct democracy or a representative democracy?

The US is a combination of federation, liberal democracy, and plutocracy. Federation because we give a lot of authority to state governments, limiting the national government. Liberal democracy because we have democratic elections and representation, but under a Constitution with separation of powers, protection of rights and other limits on the powers of the government. Plutocracy because the only people who take full advantage of the limits of the federation and the liberal democracy are the entrenched wealthy establishment who always have the courts, the laws, and the institutions in their favor.
