A 6 year old can articulate shoe comfort to you (though I still think it is better to compare several brands/sizes) but a two year old cannot. We were shoe train regulars through early childhood. They also once replaced a pair for us (without asking) when we came back a few months later with worn sneakers. On top of replacing the shoes, they took the time to hot glue gun the old pair so we could use it as a spare. |
| Are t here any stores in virginia? |
| Doesn't every shoe store have a Brannock Device? You can order them online, but I've never seen a shoe store that didn't have several. |
| You can buy a foot measuring device online- I got one when our closest stride rite closed. I'm too lazy to drive a half hour to one of the remaining places left that does this. |
I live in Nova and I think Nordstrom will measure, although I don't know if they have the same experience level as the other places. My DD's both have normal width feet so I just do as PP mentioned and try a few sizes and return the ones that don't fit. I usually use Nordstrom online or Zappos. |

If you're looking for sneakers, we had a good experience at Potomac River Running, though they don't have a huge selection of kid sizes.
My kid also has wide feet, and I typically shop online, but we went there last time when I didn't feel like ordering and returning. |
| DSW has those foot measuring thingies. |
Shoe Train in Cabin John Shopping Center. Highly recommend. Used to go to Ramers but Shoe Train is even better. |
| Once my kids hit 1st or 2nd grade they could tell us whether a shoe was a good fit or not. Every brand is so different that now I just buy the same few brands over and over online and just either buy the same size or a 1/2 size up if their current shoes are tight. |
| We bought a shoe measurer online. |

Fit Right Kids in South Riding. The owner is great with fitting. Right now she only takes appointments.

I second this suggestion if you really want to go in person. I also have the measuring tool at home, and you can even print one out on Stride Rite's website. |
| Zappos and Famous Footwear have printable charts online. |
Every brand has a different cut just like clothes. Just because you wear a size 8 does not mean you can wear all size 8's. |
