Unless your kid is in the band at Yorktown, the other girls are not so nice. Unless your kid is athlete, your kid keep her head down and try to not be noticed.

Some can be mean, but usually within their own circles. But YHS has plenty of quirky kids who have their own activities and friends. If you want to avoid the big school experience, you can also apply for HB Woodlawn and/or Arlington Tech lotteries, which are both more inclusive than the big high schools.

NP. I wouldn't say HB and AT are necessarily more inclusive than all of the other big high schools. WL and Wakefield are both pretty inclusive and accepting of kids of all walks and types. Yorktown, not so much.

Can you provide an example?

DP. Not directly an answer regarding WL; but I do know a few Yorktown students who transferred to Wakefield specifically because they believed they would fit in and be more accepted there.
As far as other schools "being known" for more inclusive culture - well, the stories giving WL, Wakefield, and HB an impression or reputation for more inclusivity and welcoming of more diversity abound all over Arlington and all over this forum. Statistics don't indicate character; but look at the demographics for each school and you'll get a sense of differences.

The really sad thing is when the mean girl is a coach.

And all of the female coaches are mean? But yes, any mean coach is a tragedy.

Hilarous! Ok band mom. I know many nice "unpopular" girls at Yorktown who do not toot a flute.

Band kids are usually geeks. Barely a block above the drama kids on the pecking order.

This could be me asking the very same question. Ninth grader has experienced awful bullying in private and is moving to either WL or Yorktown. What do people recommend to help kids transition into either of the schools?

My DD considered going back to public for 9th and only wanted WL. Did not want to go to Yorktown.

Any ideas why Swanson has so many problems now? Something about DHMS boundaries?

The problem Kid at Swanson was at ashlawn. Nothing to do with hamm boundaries.

Swanson is the same as every other middle school. The parents are just being stupidly vocal.

The 80s called. Get out of your time machine, life is no longer a John Hughes movie.
