In search of stylish, but modest, clothing for 12 year old girl

Old Navy; the small sizes in the womens (not teens/juniors) collection at Target.

If she is tall or large enough to wear the smallest clothes from the women's section or petite womens sections of department stores, I would shop there instead of the teens section. I haven't had any problems getting whole tee shirts and non ripped jeans for myself from those size sections.

I just took my tween to Old Navy and got a bunch of shorts, t-shirts, and a few jeans. There were plenty of things that weren't crop-top or ripped. She and all her friends have worn some combination of sweatpants/joggers, t-shirt, hoodie, and shorts for the past couple of years. She talks about some of the kids at school wearing crop-tops, but hasn't expressed a desire to wear them herself...

The stores seem to be full of distressed jeans, super short shorts and crop tops. Am I the only one who would rather her daughter not show so much skin? Where can we find cute, stylish clothes that are a little more modest?

Stop being ridiculous. They are in middle school, not elementary school. Every decade has clothes parents are scared of and every decade teens still wear them. The fact that you are judging your own child based on her clothing choices is the saddest part in all of this. Baggy distressed high waisted mom jeans with a baggy crop top is probably more innocent than anything you wore in middle school.

Every thread, even the most innocuous, has a hater. Welcome. Hope you feel better now.

It’s interesting that some of these responses are assuming the OP is judging their child, though there is no hint of judgment in the post toward the child. Maybe the child is also seeking different options. The OP just stated a preference for clothes that cover more skin. Geeez- look in the mirror and stop being so judgmental yourself.

+1

Do they not wear 2 pieces for swimming? I mean look at the late 90's style with tight jeans that showed off their butt crack along with a tight low chest crop top to match. The styles now are so modest. If they want to show off 1-2 inches of their stomach, who cares. Can we get to a place where clothes is just a form of expression and not where boomers (who wore 10x worse) judge a girl based on her clothes. Do better parents!

My kid definitely is not searching out ultra short shorts and would really prefer to avoid ripped stuff as the shredded threads are actually really irritated/uncomfortable. OP is asking for options, which is fine. I agree we shouldn’t have to go to 8 stores to find the one t shirt at each that is NOT cropped. We found one at GAp and my kid was saying t me that she wished it came in more colors.

My post just disappeared but following this thread. My 12yr old wants to wear two piece swim suits but has clearly stated she does not want shirts or shorts that show off those same body parts at school. She’s tall and slender so finding shorts that don’t show her butt when she bends over is hard.

Please, no child, even a modest one, wants to wear boden or hanna or tea.

Do athleisure if you can't find anything.

But no boden, hanna, or tea

I mean no 12 year old child. Maybe a 5-8 year old, but no 12 year old does!!!!!!!! those are for little kids!

Stop, these are toddler clothing lines.
