2. This year, the four VT-specific questions on the Common App were very important, even more so than the essay. The faculty member said they were specifically looking for an answer the indicated a kid that knows when to look for help. They wanted students who recognized when they needed assistance (academically or mentally) and then reached out for help. I did not read my child's answers to the questions, so I'm not sure how he hit this note, but he did get accepted EA with less than a 4.0 and a respectable, but not amazing, SAT score.

It's not just that they are more important than the CA essay. They don't look at the CA essay at all.

One essay must be “Why I want to be a Hokie” and another “That Time I Needed Help” and a third “That time I did something for someone else but ended up being about me after all”. What’s # 4? “Tell is one more thing”?

These were the prompts this year:

I'm glad they added the resilience one this year. Much better and more relevant to how you will handle your education than the discrimination question it replaced.

We’re you there Saturday? The whole three seasons in a day definitely seemed to be in effect this weekend. We came down Saturday night for the Sunday session and it was snowing and very windy. Sunday morning was grey and windy. By the afternoon it was sunny, perfect blue sky, and 62 degrees.

also curious

They’re not about stats like UVA is — it’s not a clear cut line on Naviance and many high stats kids didn’t get in this year.

I think it is too early to know. I don't think we saw last year's by county stats until the fall.

thanks. our oldest is in 10th grade but we were hopeful VT would be a safety for our kids -- looks like it's not a safety for much of our area.

We were also at Hokie Focus. My DD learned from a current student that there is a Megabus from Dulles airport to VA Tech. I have not confirmed but it sounds good to me!

I just confirmed on us.megabus.com. It is a 5 hour trip from Dulles to Blacksburg VA Tech campus. No stops. Approx. $42. That is good news!

We were at the Hokie Focus on Sunday. It was well-organized and a good event for prospective students. VT doesn’t read the Common App essay and only looks at their short answer questions. My child has lower than average VT stats (and applied test optional) but had selected one of the less popular majors and was accepted EA. She does not plan to attend as other schools are stronger in her intended area, but VT did impress us as a beautiful campus and great community. If she had different interests it would be a great option.

IF VT is that good why is is ranked so low compared to UMD, Penn state, Upitt

My kid applied EA, got in, was so excited, pretty quickly accepted the offer. I am thrilled!! I think VT really wants kids who want VT and understand the school's mission and purpose.

I think VT has always offered a great education and parents appreciate the in state price. But, demand and popularity seem to have jumped significantly in the last 2 admissions cycles.
