If you work outside of the home & have a dog

We were gone 12 hours a day. But we have a dog door, and dog has full use of the house and the yard.

The most important thing here is ops comfort. It’s just a dog.

I can't imagine hating animals but hanging out on a pet forum. Pathetic.

This is normal for plenty of people I think.

I’ve always had dogs. There were periods of our lives that 10 hours was the norm. Never a problem. Now with older kids, they get home mid day so it’s less hours.

One thing I’ve noticed when I work from home is this. If I am busy or have meetings where I don’t want to be interrupted, i crate the dogs. They literally sleep non stop until I go to get them out. Even with me being in the house where they can hear me they are content.

I don’t like long days of crates but I love my dogs so much and can’t imagine life without them.

Same. Singleton with 2 dogs. When I’m home on weekends, they sleep all day when given roam of the house.

+1

Cruel and inhumane. OP, why have a dog at all?

It’s not about you. No animal should be in a crate all day. It’s wrong.

10 hours a day in a cage is just cruel. Even with a midday walk that 9.5 hours im assuming. He is destructive because he is bored and lonely, You crating fixes the issue of your stuff but he’s still bored and lonely.

We both work but do shift work, on the days we both work our dogs are only alone for 4 hours. They are not crated. Once your dog is house broken you shouldn’t need a crate. A tired dog is a good dog. Wear him out.

Is daycare an option? I would use doggie day care but our dog isn’t good with other dogs. Ours is crated about 7 hours with a dog walker visiting in the middle of that. Our work day is longer but our kids are older and home alone a couple hours before we arrive home. I’m hybrid so this is 1-2 days per week and she likes her crate.

You are on the wrong forum. Kindly go away. This dog needs more care and attention than op can give. Maybe we should put you in a crate for 10 hours.

If you are not interacting with them what else are they going to do? Granted dogs need a lot of sleep but, their options are limited.

Sleeping when they can roam the house and sleeping all day in a crate because there is nothing else they can do are two very different things.
Do you think sleeping all weekend because you feel like it is the same as sleeping all day because you're in solitary confinement and your choice is sleeping or bashing your head against the wall?
Crating a dog for 10 hours a day is abusive.

How old is your dog?

We adopted a 8 month puppy. Two walks before I left the house for work at 8:00. Crated until about 11:30. Dog walker came for 30 minute walk. Crated again until teens got home about 3:30. Dog daycare on Saturday so he could socialize and we could clean the house.

Now that he's four he has the full run of the house during the day with a walk at mid-day and he doesn't need the two morning walks anymore, just one. When I'm home with him during the day he likes to nap in his crate and goes in there when it thunders.

I think needs change as they mature.
