Serious case of senioritis

You are not alone! My 3.8 UW gpa kid was carrying an F(!) in a class for a bit. He’s brought it up since then, but I was spending time googling college policies re: this myself. I did emphasize to DC that the college *could* throw them back!

However, like pp, my impression is that it is very rare. On another thread, someone said they knew someone who did flunk a course and the college required them to retake it in summer school. (That prospect was enough to scare my kid straight.)

The university I went to never asked - I did have somewhat legit reasons as my mom became extremely ill and I had to take care of the family. But nobody asked. I went from straight As to barely passing my 7 AP classes my senior year.

I'm OP. I'm sorry you had such a rough time senior year. I hope it all worked out okay.

BTDT 4 years ago. DS stopped turning in any work 3rd quarter which we didn’t catch until 2 weeks before the end of 3rd. It was a big loss of privileges, miserable spring break, and serious hounding in 4th quarter just to make sure he finished with Cs and didn’t fail 2 classes needed for graduation. Mid-summer he got a “we received your transcript and we are concerned” letter from the university. It included a list of support resources at the school and a caution that he was in danger of not doing well his first semester. They were right. We told him if he didn’t get it together second semester freshman year, he would his sophomore year at community college. He got it together, but that freshman year GPA hit was hard to overcome.

I would caution your kid about possible consequences, but only monitor and push as needed to make sure they graduate. After that, it’s really their choice and their consequences.

ACK! I'm OP and we aren't at F level yet, but when I get myself worked up about it, it may as well be. I'm glad your kid pulled it up and glad we are talking about this. I did feel very alone and like my kid was very broken.

You are not alone! My 4.0 kid doesn’t want to do homework, complaining the homework are nonsense because they are not even remotely related to their major, probably will get some Bs on the transcript…

My A student is going to be B student for this semester. I hope it will impact the admission.

Maybe go somewhere fun for Spring Break and he will be recharged to try harder afterwards?

My kid is struggling right now and has missed a lot of school this quarter for health reasons. Her very experienced guidance counselor told me she has never seen a college rescind admissions over grades. She has only seen problems when a kid has a serious discipline issue or doesn't graduate for some reason.

Probably true, but it's best not to make assumptions. I know a kid whose counselor got a call from Stanford when he went from A's and B's to C's. State schools are less likely to care, though.

My straight A, magnet school kid got a D in AP Lit 4th quarter last year, and it was a gift (should have failed). But you know what? In MCPS's inflated grade world, an A in the 3rd quarter and a D in the 4th quarter = a B for the semester. An A first semester, and a B second semester had no impact on college acceptance and scholarship.

Semioritis is common and it only gets worse (I'm sorry, having been there I know it is stressful). However, don't worry, chances are your kid will be fine. Mine got straight As/Dean's List first semester at college.

refreshing to hear form a parent of a b student, you are a rare breed -everyone around here is a 4.0 1600 kid.

Hi. I try to post here often and be upfront with his very normal stats for just this reason.

Me too! 3.3/30 ACT kid doing just fine, other than current senior slump which also is fine

I'm OP. I feel like there should be two DCUM College boards - one for high flying kids and one for the rest of us.

I’m up for that idea!

I’m OP. Stanford is not a concern of ours. Lol.

And I hope you left out the word “not.”

Hi. I’m OP. We are visiting his three final college choice for spring break. Maybe that will inspire him.

This is one of the most refreshing threads I’ve seen on dcum. I’ve had the same concerns about DC’s senioritis. Fingers crossed it won’t affect his admissions. He is B/B+ average student to begin with, not on the highly selective route. We’ve been pleased with his acceptances, but his senioritis has been stressing me out. I’ve told him the possible consequences and hope he gets it all together by the end of the year. He’s on track to graduate, but probably with lower grades. All the best to everyone and your DC.

Hi. I’m OP. I really appreciate the support we’ve all shown each other in this thread. It’s ok to have a regular kid who sometimes drives you insane. We will all get through this.
