Going to have to cancel spring break. What are some staycation things I can do with the kids?

And you think that a week when they’re already dealing with the major disappointment of having a vacation they were looking forward to be canceled at the last minute is a good time to drive home this lesson?

It's why kids grow up to be delicate snowflakes who don't know how to deal with disappointment.

My guess is one parent has to work, but the other is free.

We had to cancel for other reasons. Your ideas are good. For mine, they also like unlimited time to binge on electronics. I mean, it’s their vacation so why not let them do that a little with extra junk food at home. We have some similar type day trips planned too. One of us is free and the other can’t come.

If this is the case why can’t the rest of the family still go on the vacation as planned?

I certainly hope you aren’t ever one of my kid’s teachers

I wouldn’t want to as a single parent. Way more work. No rest and relaxation for me if I don’t have my spouse to take over parenting duties on vacation.

Also, what if that results in the family not being to take a trip all together perhaps @ summer or winter break, if one spouse used up vacation time or budget? Kind of mean. Sounds like your kids will have some fun options, OP. I like the idea of letting each kid (and you!) set the agenda for one day, then adding in one or 2 extras.

Sounds like one parent is using PTO for this staycation anyway. Better to go solo than wait around for a vacation together that never comes. That is how it has been with my spouse. Get everyone ramped up to go and then oops, can’t go.

Let each child pick a dinner out of their choice.

It depends on the type of trip & the parent’s preference. For example, I will take my kids on some trips without DH, but if it’s a camping trip, we cancel if he cannot go because I don’t want to take them camping alone.

NP. We thought about this but changed our mind because reviews said in April they are crowded and half the rides are not open and the water park is closed.

OP, we are just planning to do go to DC and see some museums - Natural History, Air and Space and maybe the Capitol building.

Same thing happened to us. My kids are younger so maybe not a lot of overlap in activity ideas. But I think the caverns are a great idea. Shenandoah is one of the closer to DC ones.
