What causes one to have deep pride for their State? Proud to be from …? (Ex: Texas,NJ,NY)

I get a fuming, deep, defensive sense of anger inside of me when people call my hometown (in the PA coal region) a “shithole,” that’s for sure. So goddamn insulting.

I don’t know. I love California and honestly do feel it’s the greatest state in our country but I don’t care if someone disagrees with my opinion. I can’t imagine doing anything but smile at anyone who trashed California (poor souls). I have no idea what causes people to get so tribal about their state.

I'm from FL, and I take zero pride in it. The "Florida Man" exists for a reason...

Are you raised to be proud of your State? How did it work for you?

Why is it certain States or cities and not others that have a good portion of the population that carry that pride everywhere they go? Is it encouraged?

Where are you from OP? Some flyover place you're embarrassed of, like Ohio or Michigan?

Yeah, Palm Beach and Naples are so trashy.

Is it not? Are talented people clamoring to move there?

Depends on your definition of talent. You can be as “talented” as can be, but you’re not going to be happy (statistically) living hundreds of miles away from your family and roots.

I can't think of too many states that if someone told me, "I am from x state" I would respond with "ooh how cool! tell me more!"
Except maybe Alaska.

I think people are proud of being from New York City but I’ve never seen excessive pride from New York State. Pride in New Jersey is a defense mechanism because it used to be the bit of so many jokes.

Texas pride is interesting. It’s taught in schools. Texas was the only country accepted into the USA so there’s that. But Texas is such a pit and so messed up, I don’t get the pride.

How could anyone ever be ashamed of Michigan?! It’s beautiful, it’s Motown, it’s American cars, and cherries!

Vermont was, too. But obviously a state of well under a million is not much like TX. And others...https://history.howstuffworks.com/revolutionary-war/states-once-declared-themselves-independent-nations.htm

Op here. Native Washingtonian. Born and raised here. In my opinion, there is not really a sense of personal ownership for D.C. unless you are counting maybe in that we had the Chocolate City title for a time or for the love of go-go. You just don’t naturally get geared towards deeply loving this place or going elsewhere and expressing this fondness for your hometown. Thus, it makes me curious to know how people develop a deep love for their State/City.

Love the responses everyone!

The North is beautiful. Ohio is pretty lame.
