My DC continues to wear mask

Anonymous
My kid is in MS and most the school is still wearing mask. I occasionally remind her that she don’t have to but she says she knows but she wants to; I think a lot of the older kids feel the same way.

Silver spring and TP too! Downcounty for the win! Will be a good experiment for the next spike- I wager a lot more cases upcounty.

I'm hoping this wasn't your intention, but this kind of divisive nonsense is the last thing we need right now. This isn't a game. You can focus solely on COVID if you choose to, and insist that there are no downsides to indefinite masking of children all day long. Have at it.

But, for the love of god, respect people who take a broader view of public health and who have more expertise in mental health and children's development than you do. Our brains evolved to have a specific region largely for facial recognition. Was that because seeing faces is unimportant for humans? How do you explain it?

Honestly, I think some of you who think this is no big deal, or even laudable, are wrong.

How would you feel about your 5-year old using a pacifier, because it made him "feel safe?" This is all nonsense, and evidence, I think of serious damage done to the psyche of these kids. We are raising a generation to be afraid of their own shadows. There is nothing good or healthy about this.

I stopped by my kid’s Silver Spring ES this week and of the kids I saw, around 80% were masked. We are still sending our kid masked because of health concerns in our household.

If we are going to be honest we have been raising our kids to be fearful since before COVID.

Or I’m raising an empath who is able to think of someone else than himself. Also, the evidence that masks, seatbelts and helmets etc protect people is there. As is evidence that a mild case of Covid could have devastating long term health consequences for anyone.

DP, but that goes for mental health, too. Mental health is health. Why is COVID the *sole* public health outcome you're considering? No one in any position of authority thinks that's the case (thank god).

Haven’t we established that Covid doesn’t work this way? Omicron ripped through the DMV the same way it ripped through Florida.

Because too many people from the DMV went to Florida for the holidays.

What’s the endgame though? Some magic treatment pill? Or a “better” vaccine that may take years to develop? Continuing to pull out all the stops to prevent even a mild case of Covid is ultimately going to be a lot of work.

Yes. This is my feeling too. We’ve hammered into kids that they have to wear masks for two years. We need to help them understand it’s okay to not. And for kids who are doing it because they are anxious or they want to feel safe or they are middle or high schoolers and want to hide behind masks — we are not setting them up for living in the real world.

+1 million to the bolded

The PP seems downright gleeful about her comments.

PP you're quoting and right? That giddiness (in people getting sick, no less) was disgusting, especially from someone claiming to care more about people's health than those who support optional masks for schools. Oh, the irony.

It's a mark of higher intelligence.
