Squatters are taking over the oligarchs' mansions in London

UK government should seize the mansion, sell it, and send the proceeds to Ukraine.

I wonder how they would decide which refugees get to live in the ultra-luxurious confiscated villas and which refugees get to live in much more austere circumstances..

It’s particuLarly apt because it’s exactly what happened to the rich peoole’s apartments in Russia about a hundred years ago. I wonder if Derispaska’s great grandparents were living in a seized apartment turned into communal living space?

Yet if a regular London citizen's house were broken into they'd probably have to wait days just to get a single police officer, who'd probably just take their statement, have them fill out a questionnaire, and leave.

This is a home invasion. No police force just fills out paperwork for a home invasion.

No it's trespassing, a misdemeanor. Home invasion is when someone is home and there's a threat of injury. You suck at armchair police work.

This is a terrible use of police resources.

+1

Even if it wasn’t a terrible use of police resources it’s a terrible look and a poor political choice. It’s so easy to run with images of London police protecting a Russian oligarchs empty mansion while his country murders innocent civilians in Ukraine.

I wonder what the neighbors think, if those nimbys mind living next door to squatters.
They most certainly were ok with living next to the oligarchs

Once the squatters get the bill for the ground rent (freeholds are very uncommon in London) they’ll be moving out.

Again, seize it, sell it and send the proceeds to Ukraine. The future non-Russian-oligarch owner deals with the bills.

A superyacht owned by a Russian oligarch and former KGB agent is stuck in Norway. It can't leave the dock — not because of sanctions — but because no one in the port will sell it fuel. 😃

Why are they at fault I am uncomfortable that you can be persecuted because of your country of origin or birthplace. Imagine if we do that to people in the us

They are not "persecuting" them because they are Russians or even because they are wealthy Russians. There are a number of oligarchs not on the sanctions list. They are going after these oligarchs because they are supporters, enablers and financiers of Putin who has started a war and whose military is committing war crimes by the dozens every day.
