My kid is that check mark that can give you hope…

I’m OP. UVA

What is the GPA then and course rigor? They don’t seem to care about anything else.

It’s a lovely story and I’m glad for your kid-I really am— but my kid with a decent gpa, fantastic SAT, rigorous coursework, national awards, leadership positions, excellent essay about an interesting but uncommon passion (excellent according to two teachers who read it, making almost no suggested edits), legacy status, and excellent recommendations did not get in to UVA ED. Or to a slightly less selective school EDII.

Just recently a man won $10 mill in the NY lottery for the second time. It’s exciting for him but doesn’t mean that is going to be repeated.

Sorry if this is too negative but your kid’s awesome success doesn’t really give me hope for the other reaches or even matches DS is waiting for RD. Luckily he also applied to several not so rejective schools so I’m sure he’ll get in somewhere and be successful.

Congrats to your kid for winning the lottery. I honestly mean it.

Seriously. We did Naviance this weekend.

It was grim.

Hi. I’m OP. We had the same experience. But somebody’s gotta be that check mark on the bottom left of the cluster. It could be your kid.

My kid too. Got in a few reach schools including Clemson and NC State. Not reaches for most DMV kids but for my DC. The whole family is over the moon! I guess it happens.

Is your kid in state for uva and does he go to public or private. This is so great to hear! When you read these threads you can truly get brainwashed that your kid is a total failure if they have below a 3.8 and will only get in Bama!!

Congratulations! They are great schools - and I think getting into NC State from OOS is difficult.

He’s just a well-rounded kid with solid, but not outstanding, test scores and a decent, but not spectacular, GPA. He had a uniquely honest essay, so maybe that helped, but honestly, I think he was lucky to fit into a niche they wanted to fill.

So for those of you doing this next year: Make a wish on that check mark all by itself and apply to the reaches.

Congrats!! I’m hoping the same for my son and his reach school, so your post gives me hope! My son’s essay made me cry because it showed what a good and decent kids is he.

Please don’t tear down a school that many kids go to and love. It’s that sort of competitive mindset that leads to all those red x’s on the scattergrams.

Congratulations, OP and OP’s kid!

I’ll suggest a niche. He’s male. And he’s applying to A&S.

Thanks for posting, OP.

I have a very bright underachiever. High stats, but not super-high, so not a shoe-in for UVA or any other top school.

In at five safeties and one match, but waiting for RD, which are all reaches. I really want my kid to be that check mark!! Not for prestige, but because I think my kid will come out of his shell and shine at a reach school. He's certainly smart enough, but he doesn't push himself very hard.

If not, the match is fine. But your post gives me a glimmer of hope.

Congrats to your child!! UVA is such a great school!!

I’m always curious what people mean by “national awards.” Can you tell me either what your kid won or give me some examples?

Gives me hope for my DS for RD. I wonder if his languages truly help?

I don’t think so. My niece is from VA and got accepted to NC state

I’m OP. It was just one language, but five years of it. 8-12 grade
