Final Farewell

Well said Jeff.

Dorothy Height - renowned civil rights leader. Probably the best known woman in that role. Died last week at 98. She had guts, peronality and her own sense of style. A leader in all senses of the word. May she rest in peace and may the rest of us be at least half the woman she was.

Was the flyover this morning for her?

She was an extraordinary woman who fought on the front lines for both civil rights and feminist rights. She was a friend to First woman Eleanor Roosevelt. She took counsel with presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Johnson, Regan, Bush, Clinton and now Obama. She was awarded the congressional medal of honor by Clinton and another medal by W. Bush. She was the only woman on the stage during Martin Luther King's I have a dream speach, but was not allowed to speak because she was um, um a woman. However, it has been often reported that it was she that provided those leaders with the best thoughts. She was president for forty years of the National Council of Negro Women. She bought parties together the resolve issues when others had tried with no success. She was the hat lady who loved flowers and a good party. She fought against lynchings and unequal treatment of women in the work place. She was so many things and did so many things that positively affected the lives of people of color and women and they don't even know it. She was Dorothy Height.

What in the heck is wrong with some of you?? Wish I could have seen the funeral. I admit I didn't know who she was until she passed. Now I'm sorry I didn't know more about her amazing life while she lived. Living heroes are so rare. She sounded like an amazing and inspiring person.

Thank you PP for not only an informative and inspiring post, but a classy one as well. Dorothy Height was also an excellent role model whose legacy will live on forever.

Does anyone know if the celebrations of her life are online anywhere?

I feel like a total jerk because I didn't even see clips of it - really an incredible lady.

Who is First woman Eleanor Roosevelt?

I guess PP was trying to say that "First woman" is actually called "the First Lady". But that's just a wild guess.

The National Cathedral put this up on their site: http://www.nationalcathedral.org/webcasts/height.shtml

I admit I didn't know who she was before she died either, and after reading up on what she accomplished and everyone she influenced I'm ashamed of myself. But I have big gaps in my knowledge of history between WWII and the 80s.

No, it is not a wild guess. You are quite right. I was typing so fast while attempting to not shed tears. I did not proof before submitting.
