+1

Is Gonzaga really more intense than public school? I assume it is more structured and less chaotic. There seems to be more emphasis on taking kids with a strong Catholic background than students with top grades, etc. I doubt it is more rigorous than Whitman or Churchill High schools in Bethesda and Potomac

Strong Catholic background boys have top grades. Especially after the last two years. Why? Well - their Catholic schools have been open during Covid. Public schools not only were not open, but had pathetic online schooling and admitted grade inflation. You clearly are not at all familiar with Gonzaga curriculum- - and I would also think you have limited knowledge of the publics you mention - where every child can attend.

But please provide support on your assertion as to the academic credentials of students that attend a school you know nothing about. We will wait.

I think she is just saying that if the emphasis is on taking kids who are from feeder schools, legacies and sports recruits, then you probably have a lot of middle of the pack kids. Nothing wrong with that but different emphasis than the top academic schools like Sidwell, GDS, St. Albans.

How much HW is there at Gonzaga? Do most kids take the metro to get there?
The neighborhood gives me pause

The neighborhood is one of the unique qualities of the school because it enables them to serve the local community in ways that are not possible in suburban schools. My son participated in many service programs like serving lunch to homeless (right in the basement of the church) and preparing and delivering food to local residents. They are reminded of the struggles of inner city folks on a daily basis. My son used to walk by the same homeless guy from the metro and he actually got to know him a bit because he stopped and talked to him a few times. Boys from Prep and other schools won't have this experience.

It may not hurt to get him evaluated for ADHD even if he’s showing no other symptoms. If he has ADHD or another executive functioning disorder, the Benilde program at SJC can help with all of that.

No just no. Many ADHD kids can function just fine with the right tools. My son who has ADHD and exec. functioning issues graduated from GZ and went on to a top 20 college. Did he have to work hard and longer? Yes. But it can be done. They have come far in their supports for these kids. For example, when he started as a 9th grader, he was expected to self advocate to get extra time on tests, requiring him to request the accommodation for each and every test at least a day in advance. That requirement has gone away and now they automatically give the kids the accommodations. I actually think this requirement may have helped him though.
