If you move OOB for ES but are allowed to stay, what happens with MS?

Anonymous
Hi! Reviving this thread because I'm planning to get a 1-month sublet to get my kid inbound for the school I want, then moving OOB back to my actual house for the next 5 years. Wanted to check -- do I just need the sublet for the month of enrollment? Or will I need to keep it for a few months longer, after they start attending classes?

It's ballsy to post this same idea in a neighborhood-wide WhatsApp under your actual name then immediately come here and ask the question. Also, given what's being discussed, don't you think the school will be "checking up" on people with *very convenient* address changes? Are you going to move your whole family? Are you going to expect your kids to lie, and show them that lying is appropriate?

Sure hope no one screenshots the WhatsApp comment for posterity.

"Where a PK-12 student has been attending an in-boundary school and then moves out of boundary while remaining in the District of Columbia, the student has the right to attend their new in-boundary school. The student may also continue to attend the current school through the end of the school’s terminal grade. All families are required to notify the school of any change of residence within three (3) school days of such change.

After the terminal grade, the student has the right to attend the in-boundary school assigned for their next grade based on their home address and can apply to schools outside of the boundary via the My School DC lottery. They will lose their right to attend their old in-boundary feeder school and will need to use the My School DC lottery to apply as an out-of-boundary student to attend that school. For information on options where a student moves out of the District of Columbia, see page 34."

Based on the above, the student may continue to attend through the terminal grade only. Terminal grade (per the handbook) = the final grade that a school offers, e.g., grade 5 for elementary schools, grade 8 for PK-8 education campuses and middle schools, and grade 12 for 6-12 education campuses and high schools.

If a child is OOB and won the lottery to attend, then that child has rights to the OOB feeder school as well, correct?

He should have posted in Infants and Toddlers because that's what he is.

What neighborhood in DC has a WhatsApp? There must have a crazy amount of people in the group?

told ya so

Right, but they don’t track that data, so every fifth/eighth grader gets enrollment forms for the next feeder school. That could change, but would require IT system upgrades, training, and more work for the front office staff. May happen, but probably not worth it from an operational standpoint unless it becomes a significant issue.

I'm going to teach my kids to be scrappy fighters and to work the bureaucracy to win against all odds in a system that hates them, while normie libs and right-wing sociopaths cry about the importance of "respecting the process." Also, my kids won't be born until 2026 or so on the current schedule, so I'll honestly applaud the "haters big mad" if someone saves a screenshot for a decade to try and catch me out then. 😘

And I'd absolutely move my kid a few blocks up the street for the month! Staycations are great.

I mean, that's our Plan B too, but you don't have to make it a Thing. Generations of DC residents have figured out how to make the system work for them, it's really not breaking news.

correction: you have 100% rights no permission required to stay through the terminal grade of the ES. you do not technically have rights outside of the lottery to the feeder MS (although people who lottery in have feeder rights and the rumor is that no one really checks beyond which ES you are coming from).

ES, you just register new address its easy

I would assume the same would apply for MS and HS. If you pass the residency verification check at registration, nobody is digging deeper to see what elementary you went to and what address your homestead deduction is going toward.

Yes, under the current handbook.

Parents at Deal and JR should report on whether their registrar checks this. Maybe Hardy and Stuart Hobson. It does not matter at any other school, because anyone can lottery in.
