HHI is around 600. We spend around 30,000 per year. Luckily, my husband is a pilot so airfare is free. This allows us to take 4 to 5 day trips to Europe. We usually use points for hotels or stay in vrbos that are not fancy. We do travel somewhere about once a month.

HHI $450K.
We spend about $40K/year (pre-Covid) We love to travel and were are firmly in the camp of enjoying our money while we're young and our kids are still home while also saving within reason. But we are not wealth-building or the sake of wealth building. |
You are fun! |

HHI $1-2m+
$50-100k on travel per year Caribbean trip 5-10k Ski trip(s) 10k Summer beach house(s) 10-20k Weekend trips to NYC, Philadelphia, NJ, etc 10k Florida (Disney, Miami, Marco island, varies) 10k No kid trips 10-20k International or Hawaii type big trip 20k |
What do you mean? How would I know others travel budgets in similar financial positions without asking? |
| Two kids: 5 and 6. HHI around $750k. We spend around $25k on trips. One ski trip, one Europe trip, one trip to the east coast, one trip to the south. |
| $0 because of covid. Otherwise, not a huge income and we only travel every few years. |
| This is such great info. I’ve been living in travel expenses guilt. HHI around 500 and we spent about 15K on travel last year with two small kids. But we’re early 40s and behind on everything, retirement, kids college, all of it. It’s a new income level for us and we’ve been pushing for years to get here…nice vacations makes it feel worth the sacrifice. |
|
We spend about $10-$15k per year. Usually includes a 10 day summer vacation, a small winter or spring vacation, and a couple getaway weekends.
Hotel prices HAVE gone up. I’ve been noticing that this year especially. We usually stay in rooms that are $300-$350/night (less ideally). |

These are the greatest probably the greatest posts I see on DCUM.
It would leave you to believe that everyone makes 500k+ and if you don't you are kind of a loser. The lying on these forums is so out of contol. Do you think if you type it out it will become true? |
I think they're lying because who the h*ll knows how much they spend without taking an absurd amount of time calculating it for some rando on the internet. |
| Seeing all these posted top 5%-1% HHI numbers, I really feel I should not participate in the discussion. |
It it easy to round to nearest thousand. I’m planning spring break right now. Roughly 10k. Will it total to 9500 or 12k? Maybe. I estimate around 10k. |
I can only speak for myself, but I know because each year, I prefund certain expenses for the following year. Insurance costs, camp costs, pet expenses, and yes, vacation. We budget $15k, which goes into the vacation account as of January 1, and draw down on it as the year passes. (Next year's budgeted amount is saved in a separate account, and transferred in on January 1.) We may exceed that budget by a few thousand $$ (and in 2020 didn't spend it all, for obvious reasons), but that's a good estimate. The real question is, why *don't* you have a budget for a discretionary expense like this? If you really have no idea what you spend each year on travel, that seems like a problem, particularly at a lower HHI. |
