Parent poll: majority prefer masks at our center

The kids take their masks off to eat and sleep, right? That's at least 3 hours out of the day between naptime, snacks, and lunch. I'm anti-masking in daycare because it's just stupid.

I've long felt like this board is largely over-influenced by people not in DC. This doesn't' surprise me at all.

OP unless your survey was completely anonymous including you the director not being able to see how each parent or teacher answers, I wouldn’t take this at face value.

I am adamantly opposed to masking toddlers and actively lobbying public officials over this, but there is no way I’d ever make this view known to our daycare staff or fellow parents. The social pressure to keep masking is so strong, I would worry about our family being judged or the director targeting our family for more strict covid protocol enforcement (ie sent home for sneezing) because she thinks we are Trumpy anti-maskers.

+ 1 This

The politicization of COVID by BOTH the right and the left means a lot of people are not being honest. Especially as the parent of an SN child that asks a lot of our child care provider, I don't want to be retaliated against.

Me too! I spent a lot of money and time getting Biden elected, and I definitely keep my anti mask for children beliefs to myself. Many people are still scared, which is understandable, but lets emotion into decision making more than they notice.

Some posts clearly are trolls. But I am a real, progressive, Bernie supporter who thinks it’s time kids take masks off. We are out there.

I think the majority wants masks to remain for a while longer. The anti maskers are fewer but loud.

Yep, which is exactly why I picked my kid up at noon for his last few weeks of preschool last summer. They spent most of the morning outside, but coming inside to be unmasked for the second half of his day just didn't seem logical to me.

OP back.

I appreciate all your thoughts on this. I fell in the minority of survey respondents and preferred to remove the masks on kids. The teachers have been given time off to be vaccinated and boosted and time off (not counted against PTO) for any adverse reactions. Admittedly I was disappointed teachers almost unanimously wanted masking to continue and parents as well.

The survey was completed by a third party and asked for no identifying information. I have to believe it was truly anonymous.

Also, I agree that having them eat/nap/ eat again without masks is silly. Ours even still are required on the playground but not for snack that takes 30 min.

I was hoping the survey would yield different results and begin to set metrics for an off ramp. Instead they said masks will be continue and will be reevaluated later this year.

My guess is many respondents know they either won't be subject to these requirements or when they are it is for very short periods of time. I feel like these questions tell you more about what adults want other people do to than what they want to do. IME most adults are more than happy to take off their own masks the minute the rules allow it.

Your guess would likely be wrong, as the lists I've seen included stuff like taking domestic flights, schools, eating in restaurants, attending concerts, etc., so it seems like things that people would expect to do. And I know a lot of people who can't wait to ditch the masks but want vaccine mandates in their place.

I'll give you domestic flights and concerts. Schools apply to people's children, not themselves. If you have ever eaten indoors at a restaurant you know people have masks off as soon as they sit down so clearly they are referring to the staff. Not sure why you bring up vaccine mandates but I have no problem with them personally. Though there is a reason cities that have used them have gotten rid of them.

Also people aren't on domestic flights for 6 hours every day and they definitely aren't at concerts every day. It's one thing to say you want people to wear masks in the one crowded setting you will be in for a few hours on one day, it's another to say you support masking when you have to mask for most of your waking hours most of the week.

Before covid, we went to concerts a few times a month during the summer... now its a hard no, but many are engaging in risky behavior like indoor dining and travel.

I'm not surprised. Most people I know prefer that kids stay masked until they are vaccinated, as do I (I have two under five).

If kids get sick, parents miss work. If teachers get sick, parents miss work if there is not enough day care staffing. If parents get sick, they miss work.....the point of day care is to be able to work for most.

DP everyone understands this. The fact that you're prattling on about this shows you don't care to listen to the perspectives of people who disagree with you, which is part of why some of us are so angry.

Thiiiiiiiiis.

I find that childcare centers and preschools can be very neighborhood based, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the feedback at one center varied dramatically from others not that far away.
