Is UVA a poor choice for engineering? Specifically CS?

It's not a school know for CS but given the field. Over half the kids in the 2020 graduating class ended up with 100K+ jobs (https://career.virginia.edu/UniversityofVirginia-Class-2020). Your kid can get a 100-120K job at Capital One or Freddie Mac. If they push themselves through the 4 years, they may even end up at a Facebook or a Citadel. On the other hand, companies of that calibre show up on campus at schools like UIUC, Georgia Tech, Michigan, CMU, etc. Are you going to learn any less at UVA? No.

There are many better options for CS than UVA. UVA's name is not going to give you any boost. But if you can only afford VA in state, UVA is a fine choice.

My son wasn't fond of Blacksburg, VA and doesn't want to spend 4 years there. So he did not apply. He was accepted to UVA. He was also accepted to UMD but it costs so much more.

I work in the field, and do a lot of college hiring. The kids out of UVA are generally very impressive. Kids with almost perfect GPAs and 1500+ SAT scores generally are impressive no matter what schools they go to. On average, they’re as good as the UMD kids I interview and significantly better than the VT kids.

In all my years of interviewing, only two schools have stood out from the pack in my interviewing; CMU and GT.

Yes, it is a poor choice. UVA Eng. CS Alum. Don't judge on salary, judge on salary relative to grads of other universities in CS in the same zip code/locale. That's when you see it will take a couple years to catch up. Judge on the same high school, similar SATs and see the grad school placement, top choice job placement. Then it will become clear. That being said the in-state after college debt is good and if your kid is a bully they will be in paradise. Does your kid sneakily beat up and frame his or her younger siblings to a naive parent's confusion on the rebellion? Does your kid try REALLY REALY REALLY hard and wouldn't think twice about hitting a woman or the handicapped or elderly to be one of the cool kids? If yes, you should ABSOLUTELY send your kid to UVA no matter what.

The friend circle of UVA CS graduates that I know of all are working at Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Capital One. They got recruited right on campus by those company recruiters.

We just checked price difference between GT and UVA, and surprisingly UVA is only $5k cheaper ($50k vs $45k).

UVA is not great in STEM. It’s considerably weaker than the other top public universities.

Is he a TJ kid? If so, you should expect merit aid that will bring the cost down to about the same level as UVA. If I recall, it took a couple of weeks after admission decisions before we found out (last year).
