Is it odd to go to UVA for engineering, specifically CS? I know UVA is a highly recognized school, but for engineering? Do companies go there to recruit engineers for real? I know it has career fairs but are companies really picking up UVA engineering students like that? (VT is off the table) |
Yes they really are recruiting engineers out of UVA |
depends on what other options do you have? |
Yes. They have a strong dept and many companies recruit there for CS. Especially if they want people with a strong general education + CS. |
Many companies like Capitol One. CS/engineering at UVA is pretty bad. |
Why is VT off the table? No like it?
It would be more difficult to qualify for UVA than VT (even in engineering). |
Care to back that up with any sort of data? |
This isn't true. Just ask the department for data on where alums work--it's the usual set of CS big names. They do well. |
TJ grad went to UVA due to finances and graduated in the top 10% with CS degree and works for Capitol One. |
Why is VT out? |
UVa isn't weak in anything. |
STEM |
No. My kids are VT engineer grads, but despite my bias bias… friends who kids did UVA engineering, including CS have done very well post-grad. Would have had few concerns about either kid at UVA (but VT suited both better). |
The UVA name is much more prestigious and your kid may decide after first year engineering and calculus classes that they want to change their major, as ne of my kids did |
It's a stellar school--as are many others. That's all I have. Go. Don't go. If your child goes and works hard they will have tons of options. If they go and slack off, not as many. |
