Broadway play for teen?

I love Come From Away but really really would not recommend it for a teen.

New poster. Come from Away is not only fine for teens, it's eye-opening for them too.

My DD's high school (pre-pandemic) took a busload of theater students to NYC. They visited the 9/11 museum, then saw Come from Away. Seeing the play after the context of the museum was incredibly moving. I was a chaperone so got to do those things with the kids, and talked with some of them about it. They loved the musical and said it gave them so much hope for humanity to learn how Gander treated those passengers. Not inappropriate for teens at all.

Six is a much hotter ticket than the others mentioned so far. It's a blast, but it's not got much (any) plot - more like a concert than a play.

Dear Evan Hansen is an excellent choice but you should know the plot revolves around the suicide of a teenager. But lots to discuss with your child after, and the music (Pasek & Paul) tends to be popular with Gen Z.

Come From Away is a great show, but the music itself leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of exposition in those songs, and there are only a couple melodies that stay with you. That staging and story, however, are terrific.

Hadestown was the hot ticket right before Broadway shut down. It is very good, though not my favorite. I found it very ...busy. A lot going on at every minute, and the director wanted to explore every theme. That said, I absolutely love the music from it. So it's the opposite problem for me of Come From Away: great music, "eh" show.

I'd also consider Cursed Child. Yes, the plot can be a bit ridiculous, but it's the definition of spectacle. Great effects.

Six

Both are wonderful musicals.

They're both great.

You've just got to make sure you can make it to both shows.

Finally Going to see Six over spring break. My Dd found (and memorized) the soundtrack when they were in London in 2019 and COVID canceled our 2020 trip plans.

I dunno, I heard some audio from Sutton Foster singing "My White Knight" and yikes. She's just not the right voice type for Marian.

I’m the PP who mentioned seeing SIX this spring. I wanted to see Chicago, but was wondering how appropriate it was. (I saw the movie version and bought the CD, and think my teen would love the soundtrack too)

My same DD convinced us to take her to Hamilton 3 years ago, and not being 100% familiar with it at the time I was completely surprised by “Say no to this” adultery plot line. (She had already listened to it 50 times snd knew what parts to ignore and “mumble” or hum through) she was 12 at the time.

This is a super helpful/accurate assessment. I loved Dear Evan Hansen with original cast but it is SOOOO sad. I would go for Hadestown and Six.

I highly recommend this. I was able to see it twice. Once at the KC, once on Broadway.

+1 for Mean Girls too

Hamilton, of course! My kids loved this. Highly recommend for teens of all ages.

How old is the teen? I took my 15 and 17 year olds to Dear Evan Hansen a few years. It was a wonderful production but also very hard for my socially anxious teen to watch. Too intense and hit too close to home.

It's been revised down to just one show now.
