Nextdoor is everyone's grandma now.

I live south of the Occoquan and I swear our Nextdoor is 10% mangy foxes, 10% “was that an earthquake?” and 80% “Quantico artillery practice”.

Just got on it in my area. Actually some very nice people about a lost dog post. But there was a "warning police told a friend" people claiming to come to your house to give you free masks from a government program. They ask you to try it on, turns out it is soaked in something to knock you out. Then they rob your house or kidnap you for white sex slavery.

Hi Burke neighbor!!

Too funny, I was just about to post Howdy, fellow East Bethesda-r!!

And here, coyote, eagle and owl pics, can I have free stuff, why is a helicopter circling, and gunshots.

Nextdoor is great for helping to find lost dogs and cats. A real godsend in some ways.

Occasionally there are useful discussions about certain events in the neighborhood. A few miscreants were quickly identified (teen hoodlums thinking it's fun to ring someone's doorbell at midnight or leave someone's backyard gate open knowing there's dogs in the house).

And it has been helpful in fishing for recommendations for repairmen.

I don't like how the posts are structured. It's difficult to look for posts offering things for sale. I've been looking for certain things for a small projects and they should have a separate subforum just for stuff for sale.

- pictures of birds someone took
- pictures of a sub that someone accidentally spilled a ton of crushed red pepper flakes on
- posting photos bragging about the pound cake they baked
- sharing their crappy pencil sketch of the inside of a coffee shop

RIP Nextdoor. It used to be a decent place to get community updates, local recs, and yard sale virtually. Then it became a social/political soap box to complain about issues of the day. Then a ton of covid shaming. Now it's basically a hoarder house combined with chain letters, prayer circle requests, and bragging about you and your grandkids.

I want your next door grandma! When I noped out, my feed was entirely “there was a shooting in the next neighborhood over 😱😱😱” and “Parcel thief!!!” and veiled racism.

Mine has wildlife pics, videos of crazy drivers, pictures of empty store shelves, thefts

I get post from Washington DC to Shenandoah. It’s no longer a helpful site IMO.

So true plus

Complaints about bad drivers and even bad parking
Suspicious person visiting my house (umm, don’t let them in?)
Car jackings (not sure what we are supposed to do with that info - if some has a gun and wants my car, I’m not gonna stop and argue)

I don’t visit often anymore …

This was originally posted in 2020 (someone bored during lockdown), but I think she really nails the most common Nextdoor posts:
