Eyelash extensions - guilt, worth it? Help me justify/decide

Lots of You Tube instructions on applying fake lashes. It’s really not difficult.

If you are willing to spend that much on extensions, why not just buy new and better mascara? Some are really amazing and many are made for sensitive eyes - I know because I have them. A primer before mascara makes a huge difference!

Have you looked into lash lift and tint instead? I can't stomach the price and ridiculous maintenance of lash extensions, so that's what I do, and I'm happy with the results. It wears off after 6 weeks, but nothing bad happens if you don't get it redone within a specific time frame.

OP here-
Here's the thing: the time it takes to put & take off mascara and/or false eyelashes every day is more unrealistic than the 1.5 or 2 hours once a month for extensions. I just don't want that daily maintenance. I also find the false eyelashes to be the ones that look like spiders, so obvious - I don't like that look. When I get the extensions, they are so precisely applied and distributed that I don't get that spider effect several PPs are talking about. I tried some from CVS and no actually returned them.

I know that look - eek it looks very cheap.

Do you have any you recommend? I like the Loreal Voluminous Primer - definitely gave my lashes a longer effect. But I still have not found any mascara that BOTH: - doesn't irritate my eyes and - doesn't leave me looking like a raccoon in the morning after I tried my best to remove it all before bed. I feel like it's one or the other.

I tried the more "clean" versions, I like those, but they tended to get in my eyes/irritate.
I actually found the waterproof versions, like the basic pink & green one, least irritating, probably because it's just staying on my lashes and not melting or falling into my eyes. BUT then I find them so difficult to get off, I think I got them all off and then I wake up with huge dark under eye circles due to the residue --- which is the very thing I'm trying to reduce the appearance of/disguise by lengthening/darkening my eyelashes#! I end up regretting basically every time I wear mascara, LOL.

I tried a lash tint once and wasn't impressed. Maybe because I already have dark eyelashes. I'm brunette, and honey/olive skin tone, but could see how it could really make a difference for someone more fair/with light eyelashes.

I never tried a lift though. That won't damage the lashes?

Maybe I could look into this... Thanks for the tip!

From all your experience/advice, I've kind of made a decision!

I'm probably not going to get extensions again. I'm a little scared by some of your experiences and don't want to risk harming my natural lashes- or my eyes!

I think I'm just going to give up on mascara. I'll just toss my tube and let it go.

And I'll look into trying Latisse or tint/lift!

Thanks!

OP I’ve done extensions as well as Latisse, and I would choose the former. The chemicals near your eyes can cause a lot of redness and eventual loss of volume around the eye. I used it for a year, had GORGEOUS lashes, but always red rimmed eyes that were starting to look hollow. Really can’t recommend it. I also get the red rims from GrandeLash and the others I’ve tried.

My eyes are too sensitive for extensions, but if it was more comfortable I would do it regularly. You could always try for a month or two and see if you notice losing lashes. They look natural when done correctly!

Agree about the instant raccoon eyes - I use tube mascara now because of this.

Never understood the multiple spiders on your eye look - looks crazy!

I'm watching the second season of Cheer and, yes, OMG the fake eyelashes in day to day life are AWFUL. The assistant Coach Kylee Peppers wears them 24/7 and looks like a porn star. Very cheap looking.

They look way too overdone.

The Kardashian culture really messed up the idea of beauty.

OP here - thanks. Gosh it's like everything has its downsides! With my sensitive eyes I doubt Latisse is right for me!
But I just googled tube mascara - interesting! That is not too expensive to try!

OP here - I too am not interested in the spider look, and NO I do NOT want to look like KK. NO. WAY. I am a working, active mom, and would never spend so much time and $$$ on upkeep. That's why I am attracted to the lash extensions idea - very little maintenance, it's just one appointment a month or so and I don't wear any other makeup (toner, lotion, SPF, chap stick) or do my hair beyond air drying/hair clips--- the lashes just give me the feeling and look as if I got 8 hours of sleep and managed to have time to do something with my eyes!

PP here. I would not do tint without lift, for the average person tint alone without lift is not going to show much of a difference. My eyelashes’ natural state is sticking straight out in front of my eyes, so without a lift the tint is worthless.

Thanks! So now I've narrowed down my choices to tube mascara (just ordered some!), and if that doesn't work, I may splurge on trying a lift & tint before my friend's wedding in March. Thanks!!

I had lash extensions for a year and LOVED LOVED them. Never had any issues - the only reason I stopped getting them done was the time and upkeep. The cost wasn't too bad because the place I went always had specials/packages.

Yes my natural lashes were pretty short and thin when I took them off. But I used one of those drug store eyelash serums and they grew back just fine within a month or so. No lasting damage.

Now I use loreal telescopic mascara and its my favorite. People ask if my eyelashes are real all the time.

For your friends wedding, I say do it. You'll feel beautiful.
