What is your 14yo doing this summer?

I’ve started looking at pre-college type programs at the local colleges and university so there are some possibilities. I suggested babysitting or working at the pool and she wasn’t too excited about those options. She’ll do swim team but that’s only on hour or so of practice in the mornings, and meets on Saturdays.

Volunteering is also a good idea. Just need to figure out what sort of volunteering she would be interested in. Part of the problem is transportation, since she’s too young to drive and DH and I both work full time.

where are you based op? There is a soup kitchen in Bethesda and A Wider Circle in Silver Spring (you can get a bus there and back). I'm sure there are more places if you run a search.

I’m looking at CIT and one week of a sports camp.

Two weeks of CIT at a sleepaway camp she has attended the last several years; two weeks of a travel program with Girl Scouts; two weeks of preseason training for the sport she plays for her school (although at the moment she is saying she won't do preseason .... I am postponing that tug of wills but a) she will need the conditioning and b) I think she will want to see her team members by then). If we do not do a family trip, she may try to get a job -- that is, she has said she wants to get a job, but I don't know how realistic it is to find a four week long (max) job. If we do a family trip, that will leave her with two weeks unstructured, which I am ok with.

Anyone willing to share where they found out or researched COT slots? I have a 14 year old too and just have no idea where to begin.

We are on vacation for a good part of June and I think she will do band camp in August. She will do swim team but it still seems like she needs something useful to do with herself for at least a few weeks or part of the day in July.

Op here. I’m not finding much in the way of CIT possibilities…even the sleep away camp she goes to doesn’t have a CIT program for kids under 16.

I’ve applied to a week long CS camp at UMD. I might look at a sports camp for her sport, but her interest in sports have dwindled significantly in the last two years.

I agreed with dd that she’s likely too old for most day camps, but she’s too young to work. What is your young teen doing while you all are at work? I don’t want her sitting around all day. When I asked her what she wanted to do instead, she said “IDK, practice doing my make up?”

my fourteen year old has a paid internship with our dog trainer, the trainer said she was really good with dogs and has good intuition

That’s awesome! Unfortunately my 14 yo is so uninterested in dog training/sports.

Sports camp- 1-2 weeks, 2 weeks vacation, contemplating rising Freshmen program for private HS.

Summer is shorter for him this year because he his public MS ends 8th grade the last week of June and high school tryouts for his sport begin 1st or 2nd week of August; orientation and school start the 3rd week of August.

Just wanted to put it out there that public school sports begin very early in August. If they are going to try out, it definitely cuts into how much free time they have over the summer (not necessarily a bad thing!).

Can she teach little kids how to swim.?

This is the first summer that she’ll be largely unsupervised. She’ll have to walk herself home from school (2 miles) and do her homework without me. She’ll also have to budget her time to get in taekwondo and get herself there as well as her running.

Fingers crossed!

What Geometry class is she taking? I'm looking for something for my 14 year old to do this summer.

Keep ‘em coming and thanks for sharing.

So far we have:
2 week trip to Brazil with dad
Swim team
Trip to my family’s lake house in Michigan
Service learning
Hopefully summer school of some type but not sure it will work with our schedule. Maybe band camp?

I’m actually getting quite anxious about this. I work from home and it drives me nuts having the kids here all day. I have 11 year old DD too.
