We have a seven figure income and an eight figure net worth. Some people may say we are rich but we are definitely not UC. We are solidly UMC. We travel 10x per year, ivy educated, country club, ski, golf, play tennis, etc. My kid has had a pony at her party and that really isn’t expensive or hard to do at all.

Tom me UC is billionaires, 100 millionaires and people who may not have a high net worth but are old money and exist in that world.

This is not England. UC in the US most certainly includes people who make over a million dollars a year.

We make over 1m a year and are not upper class.

Yes, she is. It's not just a number, it's about who is the ruling class in America. A dual income doctor couple making 1 million a year aren't the ruling class. They pay 40% in taxes, they aren't controlling the levers of government and industry. That is the UC.

I’m adding what I think these can be.

1. Early years raised by nanny and mom
2. High end clothing, Gucci Balmain for special occasions
3. No tech
4. Knows 2-3 languages
5,. Etiquette classes
6. Lots of extracurriculars
7. Travel at least 4 times a year

Yes but no etiquette class in 2022! And, of course, tech and multiple nannies (weekend nannies and weekday nannies - all educated).

Omg, anyone making millions per year is insanely wealthy under any marker, and therefor upperclass. No one said anything about ruling class.

That depends on how far from the nearest stables. There is one 5 mins walk from me (I live in a very MC place) and they were more than happy to walk their ponies over pre-pandemic. Didn't even cost that much.

But I think when most people hear they term UC that's what it connotes, the ruling class. Class is more complicated than just income. Pretending it's not is pointless.

I grew up with UC children in private school. Everyone knew 2 or 3 (European) languages. There was a lot of travel (international, even during short breaks). Everyone did Model UN in high school. There were no etiquette classes (that’s not UC at all). There was a lot of household “help” and random people staying in guest quarters for months at a time. There were “dinners” all. the. time. Like every night “oh honey, the French ambassador is here for supper“. UC people know each other and it’s an endless stream of visiting and being visited. Every child knows how to ski, how to hold chopsticks and how to sit quietly in a restaurant.

People who insist on downplaying their wealth just like the attention & responses they get. It’s a weird psychology. Kind of like saying “My drawing isn’t good!” in the hopes someone will says “yes it is Larla! It’s beautiful!”

Not if they're earning it, it doesn't. UC is generational or, if not, then WAY over $1m/year.

I don't have a seven-figure income, so I'm not one of the posters you're referring to, but UC goes beyond what you are making in salary. Two lawyers pulling in $600K each are not the same as someone making $1,200,000 a year in interest from their investments. UC is not just about your income.

I don’t see how it’s weird. I would never talk about this in real life.

I grew up lower middle and now we are upper middle but my father was UC. I’m genuinely curious.

How did you grow ups middle class if your father grew up upper class? What happened?

How do they learn the proper placement for table manners of no etiquette?
