OP here--thank you so much for sharing this with me. I can totally see how kids would do this (from what I've seen, almost all community service around here is purely for community service hours/college resume boosting, but it's particularly upsetting in this context.) My DD really loves the (limited) work she has done in this area but it has been with younger kids (as opposed to peers). She is an extremely empathetic kid and I will suggest she also find a way to make connections with kids her age. |
KEEN looks promising and seems to be the only place with current opportunities--thanks, all! |
My DS volunteered for KEEN, great program and well run. |
As a mom, would love someone like her as mothers helper. She'd get paid something and is huge favor. |
OP here- where are you located/how old is your child? If you are in NW DC, she's a great babysitter and we might be able to make something work (if we ever get past this wave...) |
Treatment and Learning Center in Rockville. They are also part of Katherine Thomas School which offers a camp over the summer
Lab School of Washington DC: Offers a summer camp over the summer JCC in Rockville: Takes children with special needs and they often have 1:1's Search pediatric OT and PT clinics and contact them to see if she can volunteer. Some private clinics for OT/PT and speech also do camps over the summer. Even if she doesn't want to do speech it's still a good experience Does her school offer internships senior year? If so, she could ask to be placed in one of the special needs programs within her county. |
All great suggestions--she has worked with OTs in the past (not an option right now due to COVID)...will check with Lab School and JCC. |
