Putting Cat Outside Room at Night

I had two young cats once that I used to let sleep on my bed. I have asthma and allergies so it had to stop. I simply locked them out of the room. They got used to it and I never felt bad about it because they had a nice big sofa to sleep on.

I would like to add, that when I was a child in the UK, my family had a cat that would voluntarily sleep outdoors. It would wait by the backdoor to be let out in the evenings, and we often wouldn't see it again until the next morning. Cats are more resilient than people think.

your outdoor cat was probably hunting in the night, not sleeping.

I lock cat my out, otherwise he'll wander in at 3AM and jump on my head. Try a towel under the door to drown out the meows. They will be fine and adjust.

PP here.

Hunting what? We lived in a town which is now a city, nearest park was about 3 miles away. If my cat was hunting mice and rats, then I say good.

I’d shut the cat in a room as far away from your bedroom as possible at night for a week or two so the meowing doesn’t wake you up. Then just let her meow it out. Give her free reign (minus your bedroom) after a couple weeks and if the meowing starts again, shut her in the other room again at night for a couple weeks. Keep repeating until she gives up.

Don’t feel bad and for gods sake don’t get another cat, they’ll play all night and keep you up. Or they’ll hate each other and you’ll now have even more cat problems. Just be consistent and don’t give in. One of the best things I ever did for my sanity was get all pets out of the bedroom, sleep is SO important for health. Plus fur in your sheets is so so gross.

Never allow yourself to be dominated by a pet. A pet is supposed to enhance your life not make it worse.

I broke up with a guy who wouldn’t keep the damn cat out of the bedroom.

Our cats sleep in the basement as well. Not just the basement, but a room in the basement, or else they claw at the door. They have each other and plenty of beds to sleep on.

Every time my husband or I got up during the night, our cat thought that meant it was time to be up. She now sleeps with a shut door in a room with a window on our first floor with a bed, litter box and food/water. She goes to bed when we do and we let her out first thing in the AM when we get up. Best decision we ever made!

Thanks for this reminder not to get a cat.

My cat is next to me on the bed right now. The only issues is she steps on my hai occasionally. Otherwise, I’m fine with it.

We put her soft bed, a bowl of water and a litter box in a bathroom and put her in there overnight. ONLY if she was acting up in our bedroom - biting big toes etc.

It didn't take many sessions in the bathroom for her to figure it out. Maybe 3 non-consecutive nights?

Good luck, it can be unlearned, you just have to be firm (but kind).

This. My mom had the same experience.

I love my cat and treat him like a baby. My life literally revolves around him. He started doing thsi very thing to me at night and I smacked him. I did this twice and he stopped.

This sounds so miserable for your poor kitty.

Please…..reconsider. 😿
