Omicron and decision making

At this point I’m assuming there is omicron in every single public place and we will almost certainly catch it in the next 2-3 weeks. We may or may not notice we have it when that happens.

I'm not changing anything. But we were fairly cautious to begin with.

School is closed this week for winter break, so not going there (but of course the kids went on Friday). We are going shopping (masked) as usual. We don't normally eat indoors, but we do get take out and stop in coffee shops occasionally and will continue to do so. We are driving to visit family this week and will visit indoors as usual.

I had a cold last week, and got tested plus tested the whole family. All negative although I still have some congestion.

This is me. I don’t expect to make it to February without it. So not changing my behavior since it won’t affect end results. We are vaccinated and boosted as eligible, so we have done what we can.

My kids are 12, 9, and 6 and we are all vaccinated now. Here’s what we are doing right now. Since we are vaccinated, if we are not sick and have no known exposure - we are not regularly testing. If anyone is exposed or sick - we will test.

If someone has a cold - I test now. If it’s negative for covid - all the well people can continue their usual activities.

Was supposed to go a friend's house tonight for a holiday party but now really think I'm going to have to cancel. My daughter is supposed to go to her best friends indoor (!!) birthday party tomorrow and I think I'm going to let her go because she'll be masked but I need to ask the mom about food/cake because I don't want her indoors eating without a mask on right now. We're driving out on Monday to visit an elderly relative (fully vaccinated and boosted) but I don't want to get her sick.

Also, trying to figure out if I cancel our long-planned trip to Disney in mid-January.

Wondering if I'm just over-reacting after reading too many news stories today?

I would cancel Disney. We live in Florida most of the time. I was out running errands today and no one is masking. Our numbers are rapidly increasing and people are just ignoring it. I didn’t see a single person wearing a mask in Target. And it was crowded. If I didn’t live here, I wouldn’t be here right now.

DP, but nobody that I’ve read on here is spreading it. What are you talking about?

Yep. All us negative people are completely why it’s spreading. IDGAF. Not changing a thing

I'm being cautious ahead of the holidays (visiting elderly/chronically ill relatives) but then it'll be 2019 in my lifestyle again, at least re: things that are in my control. For example -- workplace going virtual, international border restrictions are not in my control. But local travel, indoor dining...that's in my control and I choose to risk it

+1 I figure we are all getting it at some point. Time to move on.

This has always been the case. Eradicating Covid was a pipe dream at else. All you can do is prepare for the inevitable infection. Get vaccinated. If you are old, overweight, or have pre-existing conditions, get boosted.

For many this will be their first infection, and they can expect to be infected throughout their lives.

Same, but my behavior has been reasonably cautious. I don’t go out to eat regularly or get together with large groups of people indoors. But I’m all for kids being in school, I swim laps indoors a few times/week, we hang out with one or two families, etc. DH and I are boosted and the kids were recently fully vaccinated. There’s converging data now showing that Omicron is more mild than Delta, so I don’t see how it’s worth panicking about, as an individual.

(I fully get the strain on our healthcare system, and think it’s unconscionable to be unvaccinated at this point. If you’re not vaccinated and get sick, I don’t think you have the right to demand priority medical care.)

I am vaxxed and boosted as the rest of my family. We wear K95 when we go shopping. Most likely we will get COVID and won’t know it because we won’t have symptoms. I will see my family and friends and enjoy life as much as possible.

Vaxed, boosted, rarely in public inside spaces - wear KN95. Cold symptoms last Saturday so out of caution took test Tuesday as I had nagging feeling (though felt pretty much 100%.) Negative. Today before meeting family we all took test and now I’m positive.

Our personal risk is probably very low, although we do have an unvaccinated child under 5. Still, I feel uncomfortable continuing with life as usual this week and contributing to the spread that experts are warning could flood hospitals after the holidays.

It’s as contagious as the measles, so our family will act accordingly. With something that contagious, it’s really easy to have it without knowing and then pass it unknowingly to others.

We aren’t traveling to see relatives, and we didn’t have Christmas dinner with neighbors, and that seems like the right decision since left and right people we know are testing positive.

We’ll go back to occasional maskless indoor gatherings with small groups of vaccinated people when Omicron has largely passed.
