Depends on how far the school is, how busy the streets, whether there are crossing guards or stop lights, and how mature your kids are. Those are a lot of unknowns. I would think, however, that you could assume a 10-year-old and 8-year-old could safely walk home together in most cases.

Look into a nanny for one side of the drop-off/pick-up, and adjust your schedule if possible on the other. There are before- and after-care programs in most schools also. You have lots of options because this is an issue for many parents.
