NYU is in a much safer area than Columbia is

I remember my kid’s NYU friend posting a gofundme page for a classmate who's father passed away. She needed just a semester for graduation. NYU was unforgiving. They insisted on taking the kid’s father's life insurance policy as tuition payment. True story as I understood the gofundme page at the time.

NYU is so overrated though. I went to Columbia and just avoided Morningside park.

OMG the same park right next to campus that 18 y/o freshman gal was stabbed to death in 2 years ago!

Sounds like total b.s. How would they even know her dad had life insurance?

Incredibly tragic. My heart goes out to his family. Defund the police was and is a dumb idea and I’m as liberal as they come

There seems to be no shortage of sick, violent young men and at some point one really does start to wonder whether they are getting the message from both extremes that it’s OK to take out their frustrations on others. I never felt Morningside Heights was unsafe but I sure as hell stayed out of Morningside Park at night.

Students who are not street smart and familiar with NYC specifically easily walk into these situations. When I first moved there, I often felt like avoiding certain areas was judging financial status and I should just toughen up and not be afraid of any particular area and embrace the city. Nope. When those who were born and raised in the Bronx, in Harlem, in Brooklyn, in Queens, etc tell you where not to go, you need to listen.

it sounds like a friend of a friend story, and is completely irrelevant to this thread anyway

Maybe they had to report it on the FAFSA.

Wasn't the girl who was stabbed two years ago killed in/near Morningside Park as well? Sounds like that park is bad news.

Did he attack a cop with a flagpole or something?

I was just in NYC and visited Columbia…great little area however there are definitely sketchy people around. The city needs to increase police presence in that area. However I will say, I felt VERY safe in New York overall.

I felt NYC felt very safe overall, coming from a suburb of CA. But then there are these crazy things happening in the city.

I think anywhere you have nearly 10M people, it has its share of crime.
