New to hiring a nanny ... experienced parents, give me a tutorial

You can make this work. I think you’ll need to find a housekeeper who babysits, rather than a “nanny” which has an educational component associated with it. Your child is in preschool so he’s getting all of that anyway. I feel like it’s semantics but there are certain expectations associated with nanny versus babysitter. Just my .02

+2 to Coast to Coast Nannies

+1. You need a housekeeper who babysits and drives. Be clear and you’ll find someone good who will stay with your family.

is this a joke?

From what this women desires she needs to be paying at least $40 an hour.

She wants a housekeeper and nanny all in one.

I agree. And the summer will not be easier.

My only advice is, do not hire a nanny agency that doesn’t let you meet/interview the nannies before you hire or commit in any way to them.

+1. A housekeeper and nanny for three kids is going to be expensive. I would think 35-40$ per hour.

I think vacation must be offered.

Park Slope Parents is amazing as a resource. And Brooklyn is much like DC, so the information is pretty transferrable.... https://parkslopeparents.com/Nanny-101/nanny101intro.html

What agency won't let you meet or interview candidates before hiring?

OP here. We are able and willing to pay whatever the going rate is for what we advertise. But really, $40 per hour? I'll obviously need to ask around more, and maybe hire an agency, to get this right. But to be clear, I don't think we're trying to combine two full-time roles here. When a nanny starts with infants or toddlers, and later stays with the family when the kids are in school, what does she do during the school hours? I just thought it would be typical to have a nanny, who during times when the kids are all in school, could help with some of the errands and light cleaning (not expecting cooking meals or serious cleaning like vacuuming or cleaning bathrooms . . . we'll have a cleaning service for that and DH will cook dinner). And during summer duties would differ (i.e., would be focused more fully on the kids), which I also thought would be typical. Thanks again for all the input.

You’ll be able to find someone between $25 and $30.

OP have you considered having your nanny's full time hours later in the day?
Instead of having the nanny come in at 9 am to an empty house and filling the hours with chores, could your husband use extra help when he gets home--so your nanny stays on after he arrives?
I see that your kids are 12, 11, and 4--are the older kids in activities? Do you ever have nights where each of the older kids has to be in a different place at the same time, and you have to juggle drop offs, pick ups, or carpools?
Does your 4 year old end up getting dragged out to all their events and you wish there was another an adult that could stay with him at home instead?
Maybe you could schedule the nanny to stay on later to help out with that.

No she won’t. I’m making 27$ for 1 infant who sleeps most of the day no housework. Why would someone take the same pay to do housework and babysit?! For what she needs she should be paying 35$ minimum

Yes, she will. And as a nanny, you know she will find someone for $25 to $30 an hour. Someone will take the job to do housework and babysit because they can’t get the $27 an hour job.

You know I’m right. “Should” has nothing to do with it.
