Missing school for family trip

+100 as a teacher I really dislike the attitude that it's okay to pile work on the teacher to make sure your kid can go on vacation. Don't mind it at all for medical reasons or real emergencies....

So does this means I am not supposed to ask for work for the period missed? I assume teacher's would want the kid to make up the missed work.

We’ve missed a week of school for our ES kid every year. We give the teacher a heads up but never asked for work. DD is early ES and doesn’t struggle in school so we don’t have any worries about falling behind. We don’t attempt to show it was an educational trip either

When they get back we will give them what they need. I get annoyed when parents are like “we are going out of town for 2 weeks can you give us the work to take with us?” No. Parents would take their kids to India for a month and I don’t fault them but I’m not creating a month of work ahead of time for them either.

+1
We (teachers and our administrators) are very clear that we are under no obligation to provide work in advance of a planned absence.

At our school it would be unexcused. Still for an elementary school kid, I'd go ahead and do it.

Ok, thank you. I did not work ahead of time, just wanted to make sure it wasn't out of line to asked for missed work when we got back.

Nah, you’re completely fine. Enjoy the trip!

Which school?

This is one of the things the pandemic showed my family; taking them out of school for a few days is totally fine. They missed 18 months of APS and you couldn't even tell from their results since September.

In ES? No problems. Again, as long as you weren't one of those "there has to be in person" parents.

Is a week problematic? My kids have different spring breaks and considering a trip for the younger ones spring break as it’s a much less popular week… my APS’er is in 1st and doing well.

It’s fine. It’s not during SOL testing.
