Missing school for family trip

Anonymous
Has anyone had experience with this recently? We have an elementary schooler who we're thinking of pulling out for 2 - 3 days later in the year for a family trip. They're performing well academically and socially, so there are no concerns about the trip being detrimental to their development. But will they want them to keep a journal and/or complete other activities to make the trip "educational?"

Thanks!

What grade?

I mean, teachers take days off whenever they feel like it. Tell them your ES student needs a mental health week. If it’s APS, they aren’t learning anything anyway!

2-3 days is no big deal for ES. I teach 3rd grade and I would just tell you to have a nice trip and we’d see you when you return. Heck, I have a student who will miss 13 days in December.

I would do this without giving it a second thought.

yeah my K is missing 6 days before Winter break in DC. Dont expect it to be a problem.

It’s fine. Just a few days in elementary school isn’t a big deal.

I pulled my kids out twice this year for family trips. One kid in ES one in MS. No one gave us any grief. For my kid in MS we had him stay after school when we came back to catch up on a math lesson but that was it.

Totally fine!

First off, this person is an a-hole. I wish he or she had to do half the planning when sick or out that teachers do, plus deal with the attitudes of jerks like this. Secondly, I think it’s fine in elementary. Now is the time to do it- in secondary much harder. Exams, sports, etc. Enjoy it now!!

We pulled our ES kid out all the time and it was fine. Don't use mental health as an excuse and if it is, you get them treatment not skip school.

In ES— it’s fine. It gets trickier in MS.

Zzzzzz. Same song, different verse. Enjoy homeschooling!

Just do it. It’s time with your family you never get back. Same reason I as a teacher am taking that Tuesday before thanksgiving to go on a trip with my family.

As long as you weren't one of the parents complaining about lack of in-person instruction, you don't expect your kids to be allowed to make up missed work, and you think teachers deserve PTO during the school year, who can fault you?
