I agree with PPs that "hit by a deer" is a hilarious way of putting "My kid hit a deer."
But practically speaking it's the same thing. Even if you're driving the speed limit and being careful, those things will go right into the path of your car and just stand and stare at you. It's impossible to stop in time. |
| I was once t-boned by a Deer, but have hit many more head on (family lives 5 miles off a backroad in rural Midwest). Cars can usually be fixed, especially if the airbags did not deploy. Insurance may disagree, so you’ll end up doing the repair on your own and have a salvage title. |
12 years ago, I was hit by a deer. The deer ran into the passenger side door and then somersaulted across the windshield and hood. No damage to the front of the car. Passenger side door was badly dented. |
| I read this and thought the kid was hit by a deer while walking because he wasn’t in a car. |
No— you were obviously going too fast. If i know I’m in a deer area, I’m going 25 mph or less. I’ve seen deer jump before my car too many times to drive any faster. |
Nah I think it's more dangerous to go 25 mph at night on a highway with a speed limit of 50. I've seen people get pulled over for doing that. And lots of deer are in areas that aren't designated deer areas. But feel free to do as you're doing. |
If you live in the WMA you'd be driving 25mph literally everywhere. |
A friend of mine was badly hurt when a deer jumped directly at her car and came through the windshield. It absolutely does happen. |
Same! In my case the deer ran into the side of the car and when it went across the hood it broke the windshield. Terrified me because I was driving only about 30 on a residential road and never saw it until it hit the windshield. |

I was sitting at a stoplight in Anne Arundel county MD several years ago. A car coming from my left, with the green light, hit a deer that bolted out in front of it right at the intersection. The car hit the deer and knocked it probably 20ft up in the air all the way across several lanes of traffic, and it landed right on my hood, grill and windshield. Airbags all blew, got scalded by the coffee I was holding, burns from the airbag gases.
Again - I wasn’t even moving! I was a red light just sitting there. Car was totaled. So yeah, it’s entirely possible to get hit BY a deer. Or is my “locus of control very externalized”, too? |
Yes, but only for liability. We did this with my 2011 minivan that was totaled by baseball sized hail in 2018. |
That's insurance fraud but okay. |
| My dh was literally hit by a deer..the deer was running from something and hit the side of car while he was driving along. Wasn't enough damage to total, thankfully. |
But did you see Gilmore Girls? She was stopped at a stop sign when the deer rammed her car. Is that what happened, OP? Hmm? |
No it isn't. NP but I did this in college - the insurance calls you and tells you what your payout is for them to total the car and claim it, and what your payout is if you intend to keep the car instead of junking it. Two different numbers. |
