Va Tech 2021 Admissions Profile

Anonymous
You almost can’t look at VT as one school. What you apply for (college/major) has an effect on admission.

and all that matters is what it takes to be admitted from your high school
And major

not general stats

Thanks.

I was the one who posted that, but I inadvertently posted Fall 2020 numbers, which themselves had ridiculously large waitlist admits. (Fall 2021 are not out yet) But I have heard that the WL was even more used in Fall 2021 admits, so it doesn't change the story much. VTs enrollment management creates a lot of angst, serves their purpose of raising their reputation, but rarely shuts qualified students out because it still has a higher acceptance rate than other similar caliber schools.
So, sorry for the error, but I think the story remains the same.

Adding: But here's a little summary--not "official" common data set though: https://vtx.vt.edu/articles/2021/08/ua-2021snapshotofincomingclass.html

3.98 GPA?!?! That's unweighted? You basically need all As to have the average GPA at VA Tech???? It's not even a top 25 school. What in the world???

Weighted GPA, obviously.

is it weighted? How is it obvious? How do you know that??

Well, we’re in LCPS and that’s the only GPA they report. I suspect other school districts are similar.

In the SCHEV link it's clear the GPAs are weighted since some are above 4.0. And that shows the VT median GPA was 4.0.

Loudoun county is one of those with very inflated GPAs. They give honors bumps for music and band etc. and have un- timed tests and multiple retakes.

Untimed tests and multiple retakes? where in LCPS is this? My kids just graduated last year and always had timed tests and could only retake once for a max score of 80. That said, jt DS did get a .5 bump for his band senior year LOL no idea what that was but happy to take it.

I agree. I was shocked at the discrepancies in admit rates by major. My child (who would think they’d never have a chance if the average gpa is 3.98) applied for a less competitive major based on the data showing she has a decent chance.

All school districts, not just Loudoun. And I don’t know where you get “multiple retakes” from. You may get one retake and your score is capped at 80.

NP. FCPS doesn't give honors bumps for music and band!

Is there a place online that shows admission rates for VT majors?

Anonymous wrote:I looked up VA Tech in my son's private HS scattergram. I picked the students who were admitted closest to my son's current stats. These are weighted GPAs. It really depends on your school/school district and whether you are in-state or out-of-state.

GPA: 3.45
SAT: 1160
ACT: 20
Accepted
Application: Early Action

GPA: 3.45
SAT: 1180
ACT: —
Accepted

These stats will never happen anymore at VA tech- unless you’re from ROVA or are a URM.
Application: Early Action

Unlikely from DMV unless a recruited demographic (ROVA, first gen, etc.) and/or easier major needing to fill seats. I know kids deferred and rejected from ED with far higher stats.

I'm surprised how few students submitted test scores--only about 41%! And it's not like the average scores are THAT high (1320 mean). (In comparison, 50% submitted to UVA and 51% to W&M and both have average scores well over 100 pts higher). But if you look at JMU--only about 1/4 of students submitted and the mean is 1230 so VT is outweighing them by far. It's just so strange--there's going to be a ton of students with far weaker scores than ever before at these two schools.

VT Engineering applicants are probably skewing the higher SAT’s vs JMU.

I looked at CS and it said 100% who applied got accepted but I thought at VT you cannot apply to a Eng major you are just in general engineering until sophomore year where you have to have a 3.0 to pick your major. Am I wrong?

You apply to the school of ENG as an incoming student. You pick/apply to a specific major within ENG during your Soph year.

VT is the only Virginia public where the 75th percentile SAT reaches the 25th of UVA and William and Mary. JMU's 75th percentile is 100 points below UVA and that is with only a little over half as many submitted ia score on a percentage basis. (50 percent at UVA vs 26 percent at JMU). There is definitely a range in selectivity.
