NP here. It might seem dramatic but after my Moderna shots it felt like someone had wailed on my shoulder with a baseball bat. It was well beyond tdap soreness. I've never felt anything like that from a shot before. So...results may vary.

PP who had a similar experience with Moderna. I think Moderna causes more pain because it delivers more spike protein (even the boosters). Inflammatory cells rush to the site of the “invasion”.

My experience with Moderna:

Dose 1 - weird but not terrible headache the day after, "covid arm" rash for about a week
Dose 2 - about 8 hours of bad headache & brain fog the day after
Booster shot - 102 fever, chills, nausea, muscle fatigue the day after. Could not get out of bed for about 12 hours.

The booster shot was 10x worse than dose 2.

I had a sore arm with Moderna 1 and 2 but nothing major. Like a flu shot. Pfizer booster was more sore but nothing like OP describes. I could have easily lifted a toddler.

Sometimes the sore arm is the result of the person who gives the vaccine. Their inexperience in making sure the pick the right location on the arm can cause issues.

This makes me want to get the Pfizer booster. Your “booster” reaction was my dose 2 reaction.

I just got Pfizer after initially getting J&J. Zero reaction.

i am only surprised because i felt absolutely nothing with the first 2 pfizer shots this past spring.

apparently this is a good sign:

Wrong. I’ve had tetanus/tdap shots and yes, my arm was very sore for a few days. But after my Moderna booster the pain in my arm was excruciating and I could barely move it. Everybody reacts to vaccines differently.

I had zero arm pain after a day but was cold and headachey for 2, both doses. Expecting same for 3rd. NBD.

Advil, epsoms, water, broth, sleep, time

FYI, if this concerns you, moving your arm and exercising for awhile right after the shot can help reduce how sore your arm may get.

This. The more you move your arm the less discomfort there is. I didn’t work out but I moved and stretched a bunch.

+100 on exercising helps. My arm was really sore after all 3 Moderna shots but I decided to rake leaves anyway after the last one. I was amazed at how much better it felt.

It’s not intuitive because normally when a muscle hurts from overuse or strain it’s better to rest it but an injection is not a muscle strain.

Drink water or Gatorade, take acetaminophen and do some moderate arm exercises.

Just had Pfizer booster yesterday and was dreading it bc both previous doses laid me out. Sore arm but that’s it. Zero other effects.

I had a Pfizer booster and had the same effects as the second moderna shot. Basically chills and body aches all day the day after. And of course very sore arm. Also weirdly I had to pee every 30 minutes and I wasn’t drinking so much for that to make sense. But alas after 24 hours I’m back to normal, even my arm.

NP. Everyone is (gasp) different. I had to go to India pre-covid, and at one point got three shots at once - tdap and two others (I think it was typhoid and hepatitis). My arm was sore, but not nearly as sore as from my one shot of J&J. The J&J was not only more painful, but the pain lasted a good 6-7 days. (When I got a Pfizer booster shot, it was sore for less than 24 hours).

NP- I had practically nothing from my J&J back in the spring but a really sore arm for several days after my recent Phizer booster. Just another example of how we are all different

The nurse who gave me my first Covid shot recommended that I move my arm around a lot the first hour after the shot and that helped me a lot both times. Will do that again after receiving my booster.

+1
No side effects before, but got very sore arms from booster. I could pick up child if I had to, but would want to avoid it since it was so darn sore. DH had same experience of super sore arm.
