Dogs vs. kids

Anonymous
I don’t. They either have kids later and realize they differences (and similarities), or they don’t and stay wrong. Either way, I don’t care.

I do like OP - make a joke like, “sure, but when a puppy wakes up the middle of the night, it doesn’t want to suck on your bleeding nipples, I hope!” If I know them well-enough.

It's ridiculous OP but what can you do? I can't even believe people who compare puppies to newborn. When's the last time you stuck your newborn in a cage and went shopping?

If she wants or wanted to be a mother but life hasn’t worked out that way, and she’s poured her love into a pet, just have some compassion.

Yes, this.

My SIL is convinced that it’s the same thing. She’s childless of course. I didn’t want to get into it with her at the time so I just kind of laughed and made a joke about not having to save for college with dogs.

But seriously, how would you explain to these “fur parents” that it’s not the same thing?

Why do you care? We all know there is a huge difference between raising a dog and a kid. Your SIL will understand this eventually or she won't. Your best bet is to just ignore her comments. Don't engage.

- childless woman

+1

For the record, I think children are much easier than dogs. I might have easy kids, but I find dog training/walking, etc. stressful. At least kids become more independent.

There are similarities and there are differences between taking care of babies and puppies. Whether it’s harder to raise kids or not seems to be very individual.

That said, OP, why do you even care? She’s allowed her own opinion. Leave her be.

+1. I have raised both. . . multiple times. I do joke that there are similarities (I have cleaned up the bodily fluids of more than one child and dog.) and that the kids were easier. . .

Agree with PP above. Why try to convince her?

I wouldn’t care.

Why do you feel the need to change her mind?

Not the OP but honestly it is kind of offensive to assert that your experience of owning a dog (that you can leave home alone all day if you want to) is the same as raising a kid and preparing it for adult life. It’s laughable.

It’s only offensive to people who act like parenthood is an act of martyrdom.
I have both. The experiences are similar in some ways, different in others. Dogs are easier than kids in some ways, more difficult in others.

Don't bother debating. She is an idiot.

This. Do you remember the old saying, "never wrestle with a pig; all you get is dirty, and the pig likes it?"

For avoidance of doubt, your SIL is the pig.

If she gets really obnoxious, lean into it. Send her a Mother's day card, send her information re a 529 plan, etc.

People think this until they have kids.

I just let it go.

^^Exactly.

Women who take offense to every baby/puppy comparisons are showing how insecure they are. Seriously. People can have differing opinions about this without it affecting you. The fact is, there are similarities….and differences.
