If you think some middle aged childless spinster who loves her dog is such a tragic person, just go hug your spouse and kids and be grateful that your life isn't so sad. Ask yourself why you feel the need to complain about or mock people you feel sorry for.

Lol. You realize you’re insulting childless “dog parents” pretty hard while attempting to chastise the OP, right? Kind of an equal opportunity hater, I guess.

I AM a childless "dog parent". I don't think I'm pathetic at all. But it is very obvious that underscoring a lot of these conversations is the belief that childless people who love their dogs are tragic/pathetic people.

No. I think what's "pathetic" is just when dog owners refer to themselves as parents and believe their relationship with their dog is the same as having a child. That is disturbing more than pathetic, but I do feel sorry for them.

Why are you in the pets forum when you clearly hate pets?

Thinking that using a dog as some kind of weird substitute for parenthood is sad and strange is not the same as “hating pets”.

There's really nothing sad or strange about wanting to nurture and take care of a dog/puppy when you don't have kids to nurture. It's actually pretty normal.

Why do you feel the need to change her mind?

Not the OP but honestly it is kind of offensive to assert that your experience of owning a dog (that you can leave home alone all day if you want to) is the same as raising a kid and preparing it for adult life. It’s laughable.

It’s only offensive to people who act like parenthood is an act of martyrdom.
I have both. The experiences are similar in some ways, different in others. Dogs are easier than kids in some ways, more difficult in others.

^^Exactly.

Women who take offense to every baby/puppy comparisons are showing how insecure they are. Seriously. People can have differing opinions about this without it affecting you. The fact is, there are similarities….and differences.

You have no idea what you are talking about. You would know that having a dog is not the same as having a child....if you had a child.

She didn't say "the same" she said "similarities and differences."

I agree with her and I have 2 children.

I agree as well (2 teenagers and 2 dogs).

Because these people want their dogs treated as children and allowed in the same places. It would be one thing if they kept their behavior to their own hole but it spills out everywhere. This is how you get dogs on tables on restaurants and dogs slobbering on food at the grocery store.

It sounds like your problem is with stores and restaurants that allow dogs. Choose places that prohibit them—you’ll be much happier.

Lol if only it were that easy. People ignore signs and take their dogs everywhere.

Because they think of their dogs as equivalent to children.

So what if people care for their animals? I’ll take that over animal abuse. If they’re taking a pet into a store that doesn’t allow them, alert the managers.

I have. At a grocery store. Not a service animal (it's pretty obvious). Managers ignore it because they don't want to deal with the type of princess who takes their fur baby into a grocery store. I'm sure they would feel differently if I rolled into my local Safeway with my German Shepherd....

You do realize these types of people are in the minority. There are plenty of parents that let their children get away with aggregious behaviors as well.
