Attempted kidnapping in Adams Morgan

Anonymous
I just saw this on the news and this was terrifying!

(i’m not to stir the pot- but did anyone else notice that the mother didn’t publicly think her nanny, who literally put herself between the kidnapper and her daughter? Talk about being under appreciated!)

Maybe the reporter didn’t ask the mother for a comment? Maybe the family was trying to recover privately.

It was in her comment to the news reporter. She emphasized how brave her five-year-old was, she really was, and she thanked everybody but the nanny.

Holy crap that is terrifying.

Terrifying. But I don't know why it would be less likely to happen in Ashburn.

It's not, but that's a standard response by some posters whenever there's a complaint about crime in DC.

Not a fan of math are we?

Related: the You're Wrong About podcast has a good episode mythbusing child trafficking/kidnapping. https://www.stitcher.com/show/youre-wrong-about/episode/human-trafficking-65528268

The point is, it's really not common.

Also, yes, this is terrifying that mentally ill homeless person tried to steal the person's daugther but I don't see how this could've really resulted in a kidnapping. The homeless man didn't have a place to take the child. He didn't have a car to drive her away in. There was a bus full of people.

Maybe she had previously warned the nanny not to walk near that block? Maybe the nanny is illegal and she doesn’t want to draw attention? There could be many reasons.

Some unhoused people are seriously damaged/disturbed/creepy. The tendency in DC to valorize the homeless sympathetically, needs to be tempered by the knowledge that some are incredibly dangerous. A women was violently attacked by a " no fixed address fellow" in the GW parking lot just a few short weeks ago. There was a spate of killings by homeless on mostly women going about their business a few years ago. It's great to help productive people looking for a hand up. The rest don't need to be punished (unless they commit a crime) but they do need to be addressed so they are not roaming around exhibiting severely anti social behavior. How much counseling are this kid, and nanny, going to need?

There are fewer crazy people of no fixed address in Ashburn. I don't want to move there either, but it's definitely true.
