Same-team kid steals the ball

Anonymous
OP, I understand your frustration. We had a similar situation when my DD was playing Rec years ago. The other player would keep stealing the ball while my DD was dribbling in a game. This player was a complete ball hog too.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to help the situation by yelling directions at the other kid and it only pisses off the other parent.

Endure it until the end season and move to another team. This is what we did.

Stop yelling at children. If you must, yell at your own only.

What’s wrong with what I yelled? The kid needs direction and our coach isn’t giving it.

Looks like you should volunteer to be the coach next year. And shut up in the meantime.

Amen.

OP what you're talking about is taking on a coaching role. I'm assuming this is a Rec team since it has girls of varying ages. Put it this way - at work would you step in and take over someone else's job just because you disagreed with how they did their work?

There's a big difference between how age 7 and age 9 play on the field. My advice is to let it play out this season, and find a team with 9-10 year olds this spring.

This is why people move on from rec soccer. Move your kid to an age appropriate team in the spring, then you can assess if she is really any good.

+1.

Repeat the age of the children aloud to yourself. Does that change your perspective here?

Why is your kid playing with kids two years younger? Did she get held back at school or something?

I call bullshit. No team of 7 year olds has positions like "center forward".

Welcome to soccer in the dmv. My children are older now. But my DD had a teammate on a u9 travel team (2nd team of a large club) that stole away the ball from my DD and others all the time and dribbled. She dribbled all the time. It was annoying. I didn't say anything to anyone and it just festered. I'd be surprised if the travel coach didn't pick up on the behavior. If the coach wanted to stop the behavior, she could have done something but she never did a thing about it. The same girls is now on an ecnl team probably doing the same thing. Maybe suggest to your child to shield the ball away from her teammate.

If she’s on an ECNL team she must be doing something right.

Rec teams are often combined age groups past U6. There wouldn't be enough teams to do a internal league with single age groups.

What clubs around here do that? Our club goes strictly by grade level for rec.

OP here. That wasn’t me. I don’t know what a center forward is. My kid was playing defense with the little girl. The teams ages are 7-9. It’s Great Falls-Reston. FWIW, I think the little girl is from Great Falls. She sometimes comes to practice in cute little skorts and her hair all done up. Makes me gag. Then she steals the ball and kicks it the wrong way.

You might find more sympathy if you stop acting like such trash.

Really? I thought GFR divided rec by birth years. I’m surprised their enrollment has fallen off so badly they have to combine them.

1) The coach should always yell at players. Builds character
2) Only coach from the sidelines when you know you are correct and the team will really benefit from your direction. Make sure you are loud enough for everyone to hear it as the kids are young and will only take your direction to heart if heard over the other parents.
3) Any good coach will want to have a meeting after every game to discuss tactics/playing styles for the next game. It is good if you take notes during the game and mention specific players/plays during the meeting.
4) Repeat steps 1 -3 at every game.
