I'm an old mom who attended the Center and magnets for MS and HS-- AMA

I have a real question, OP, not just unadulterated snark, like other posters. Having gone through all those magnets, did you fare better in college admissions compared to, say, your neighborhood kids who graduated from regular MCPS schools? And did you fare better post-college?

No disrespect OP but your experience at those schools is wildly out of date and therefore completely irrelevant.

Yeah, who cares about history anyway, the world didn't start until I was born!

No, I want to hear about it. Which one was more weighing more then? Quest for knowledge or benefit for college application.

Yes, hard to believe, but in the old days, everyone actually wanted to move here and raise kids here. Schools were excellent. All in the past.

- not op but have been here 30 years

Just stop.

MCPS is one of the top school districts in the country.

Move to Alabama or MO then come back and try again.

I am so tired of this garbage. You don't like it move or put your kids in a private school that most likely is sub par to MCPS particularly in math & Science.

Truth hurts, I know. But it is what it is... MCPS is no where near the top in the country, not even in MD.

Of course it's not true. The demographics of the county has changed greatly over the years but the same high quality education is available today that was available when I attended the Blair magnet 20 plus years ago. In many ways I feel my children's education is superior to mine but I also don't rely on the school to do everything. Neither did my parents.

DP

I attended a G&T program in another state. My parents were poor and my excellent public education got me into a solid college on scholarship. My parents definitely relied on the school system and it served me well.

It’s different now. I see with my own kids that if I solely relied on the school system, my kids would be screwed. Little to no writing instruction and subpar Math instruction.

LOL! According to who?

Even by MCPS’ own stats, the number of kids at or above levels of proficiency is declining.

The math instruction is far better than what DH or I received as children, but we have no expertise in that field to assess the complaints. Magnet math instruction did not much differ from the home school (DC did not attend the STEM magnets) other than peer cohort. The weak writing instruction is an enormous problem. The difference between magnet and home school courses in that respect is absurd. I know my RMIB kid will be extremely well prepared to write college-level research papers, but very concerned about his younger sib at the home school.

+2 I'm curious about this, too

G&T is a scam. For white/Asian Smart kids who don’t need it.

I moved from out of state and my old school district cancelled them like 20 years ago and focused on bottom 10 percent of students who actually need the extra help.

it is why TJ changed its admittance policy. Even better shut it down as a G&T and open it up to students in need.

So let me get this straight: the top district in the Nation (MCPS) sticks with a Curriculum (2.0) they developed with a multinational corporation (Pearson) for nearly a decade with failing results until they pay half a million to the top education research lab in the Nation (Johns Hopkins) finally tells them quit it! Does this sound like something one of the top school districts in the Nation would even ponder?

Given that people constantly assert that schools are in decline since the time of Socrates it's worth hearing what they have to say.

It's one of the top districts because of the people who live here mostly. This doesn't say much about the administration, its bad priorities, or ability to squander money.
