Is it true that in the old days, everything was wonderful, whereas now, there's nobody left in Montgomery County except rats who have not yet fled or drowned? That's what I read on DCUM.
Of course it's not true. The demographics of the county has changed greatly over the years but the same high quality education is available today that was available when I attended the Blair magnet 20 plus years ago. In many ways I feel my children's education is superior to mine but I also don't rely on the school to do everything. Neither did my parents.
DP I attended a G&T program in another state. My parents were poor and my excellent public education got me into a solid college on scholarship. My parents definitely relied on the school system and it served me well. It’s different now. I see with my own kids that if I solely relied on the school system, my kids would be screwed. Little to no writing instruction and subpar Math instruction.
The math instruction is far better than what DH or I received as children, but we have no expertise in that field to assess the complaints. Magnet math instruction did not much differ from the home school (DC did not attend the STEM magnets) other than peer cohort. The weak writing instruction is an enormous problem. The difference between magnet and home school courses in that respect is absurd. I know my RMIB kid will be extremely well prepared to write college-level research papers, but very concerned about his younger sib at the home school.
