I've run the Frederick Half Marathon a couple of times. It goes through downtown Frederick. I think Frederick is a very cute town.

Also, I've heard great things about this soda shop.

I've a feeling you and the pp have never been to Frederick.

It was a staunchly Unionist city during the Civil War. Yes, it was also home to Justice Taney, but that's complicated American history for you.

And it's also rapidly diversifying these days. A significant Latino presence and central Frederick also has an AA population.

Dp. I’m AA and been to downtown Frederick several times. All I typically see are white people. I wouldn’t call it diverse.

I was out in downtown Frederick on a warm June night and it seemed like the whole town was out. It was a great atmosphere and FWIW, I noticed that it was a very diverse crowd.

And all know what it means when we see lots of white people.

Does the diversity really matter???
I am white, my husband is black. we go to downtown silver spring, predominantly black and bethesda, predominantly white fairly often.
Whether or not the area is diverse doesnt away or deter us.
it gets tiring that everything has to be about race.

This was my first impression as well. It reminded me a lot of Old Town Alexandria. A little more sprawling than I expected.

It reminds me more of Ellicott City than Alexandria--fewer chain stores.

It’ll take all of 5 minutes. I took my kids once when we were going anyway to McCutcheon’s and we were all pretty disappointed.

Eh, I almost guarantee they are white. It's usually white people that make comments like this.

Off topic, but this is such a great race. Anyone looking for a half should consider Fredrick.

No. It’s super liberal actually.

still mostly whites. Rich white DC tourists.

Some places might be white. It isn't necessarily significant.

Regarding "rich white DC tourists," it's actually a pretty cheap day out. I don't think it draws big spenders and high rollers.

I haven't been in several years, but it used to be a place where there was actual independent retail. This, of course, because the rent there is cheap enough to allow this to happen. In cities all over the country, only chains can afford rent in cute neighborhoods. Thank goodness for the handful of thoughtfully redeveloped small towns on the fringes of metropolitan areas.

I am AA and love Frederick. Each time, I find a new cool find. M favs: Earthly Elements, Hootch and Banter, Sumitra, Frederick Fudge and Ice Cream, Antique Emporium, a yarn shop I forgot the name to.

In Bethesda, no.

Once you are out of the DC metro area, yes.

Went to Westminster, MD and it was redneckville. Had a racial incident happen at an event and had to get security to control the crowd and escort our group to our cars.
