Will environment be a factor in deciding where you live (if you are facing job choice or retirement)

Anonymous
Yes. Even though I am from the south, I don't plan on moving south of Virginia. Even that may be too hot for me by the time I retire--I am getting more and more heat intolerant as I age, which is quite unexpected.

It's actually caused me not to want to become too attached to where I want to retire, because it's probably not a good idea to plan too far ahead.

I work in renewable energy and the changing climate of the south is probably reason #14 why I won't live there.

Factors I will look into, though, are the water source and availability, propensity to natural disasters, proximity to rural areas that we can access for organically farmed produce and ethically raised meat, community programs like composting. What else should we consider in terms of the environment?

100%. Not moving out west. The article in the Post today of the water shortages in parts of NoCAL are only a glimpse of what's coming, faster out west. We always wanted to move to the beach but we are no longer doing that. And I know a couple of people selling family beach homes before more effects of climate change are felt there and they can't offload it. Then: see Miami building collapse.

So far, the Mid-Atlantic is where we are staying for now as we seem to be in a good spot (obv not perfect). If we do anything we'd prob move a bit further north.

The horrible allergens around here are a big factor, particularly ragweed! I think I might need to move to the desert, but then there won’t be enough water, lol. Still trying to figure this all out.
