My kids are sick all the time, too many sick appointments and too many testing

Are either of your kids in actual school? If not, I would strongly consider getting a nanny and pulling them out of daycare for the year.

How old are your kids?

I would get a nanny and send kid to part time preschool if you can afford it.

You are starting over with your kids immune systems. It's the first year of daycare all over again.

I am not!

I had one kid that got sick all the time and one that very rarely got sick and when he did he never got a fever or got that sick. Just kind of shook it off after a long sleep usually.

My oldest kid has been in daycare/preschool since he was 2, in person during pandemic, and he is in kindergarten at 5. He rarely get sick that often till the past month once his little sister enroll in daycare, but I cannot rule out that he may get sick from his new public school.

My youngest has never been in any daycare since born, so she is the one that keep getting sick and passing it to everyone in the family. I was seriously sick for a week because of her, DH had lingering cough for 2 month (now all good) because of her, DS had been getting sick sometimes from her as well. She is almost 3. She gets sick, feels better, gets sick again, feels better and go on. Even when she is sick, she is still very active.

Both kids love daycare/school for social interaction, unfortunately I am not considering nanny for little one, and the older one is required to be in school (except I homeschool which is impossible due to work at office) because of his school age.

Are you getting your kid(s) tested for covid? It seems pretty standard now that kids need a negative covid test to return to school.

Then you're just punting the problem down the road. Their immune system needs to encounter germs to strengthen up. You either deal with it now, or you deal with it later when they're in real school when missing days is actually going to hurt their education.

Dp here. Did you forget we are in the middle of a pandemic? Kids need doctor notes and covid tests for runny noses.

This x100.

It seems a bit much that you have had to see the doctor 15 times in 2 months.

I have 3 kids and I don’t remember them getting sick a lot. The older two (8 and 6 now) were in playgroups with a nanny since they were born and started schoo at 3. Youngest is 2.5 and because of Covid has never been in any school environment, but he was always around his sisters and went to playgrounds a lot. He has had a runny nose for a couple of weeks and has not missed a day if school. He never had any other symptom. His classmates also seem to have runny noses often, but they have all been in school (I think). All kids are required to wear a mask. All 3 of my kids get tested weekly (per school requirement), but I have not had to take them to the doctor yet.

I am sure they will get sick (though masks were very effective last year for my older two and they were never sick)… the Fall has just started.

This is happening in my youngest’s toddler class. It’s normal for kids to get sick a lot when they start school and daycare and haven’t been socialized around other kids regularly before. My older daughter (doesn’t get sick much anymore) used to have an ear infection every month. Unfortunately, the daycares and schools have these policies now where every cold requires a covid test. I think it’s insane and our pediatrician for my youngest I could tell was disgusted by what the schools are putting these little kids through. If all the adults would just get vaccinated, we wouldn’t have to put our littlest kids through this.

And, they are currently sick again, and all of them are covid negative, and just cold/virus, nothing serious and no medication given/no antibiotic required. If it is pre-pandemic, I would not have taken any of them to see pediatrician that frequently because I know it is not uncommon for kids to get sick. And, unfortunately, everytime they get a lot better and go back to school/daycare, they get sick again, probably from other kids there. It is just a loop that never ends, and fall just starts.

How do I survive the rest of this school year with my 2 kids? Their sick symptoms is ONE or A FEW of those each time which are runny nose, fever, sneezing, diarrhea, vomiting, tummyache, cough or low appetite. And, I feel like it is always I take them to pediatrician appointment, and they get checked and say my kids are fine, just cold/virus, and get them covid tested, and we got sent home. And, we stay home on weekends, no playdate, no social gathering, no dine out/dine in, just random walk in neighborhood. I don't understand why some kids are not sick but some kids are sick and they hang out together at the same classroom masked? Are some kids stronger and healthier and not easily to get sick? At once, I am told that 50% of kids are sick from the same classroom for a few days.

If I were your employer, I would be fed up with you taking so much time off for children's medical appointments. I hired you to do a job not take your kids to the doctor all the time! Your DH needs to step up and take them to doctor half the time.

I now have a preschooler and she also has not been sick since covid. She goes to preschool for 3 hours per day. She doesn’t eat lunch there and they are masked all day.

Your DD’s situation is not at all similar to OP’s. My DD is also in a half day preschool program three days per week and is almost never sick. My friends who use daycare have a different situation. Colds are always going around because kids with cold symptoms can return to daycare after a negative Covid test. My DD’s preschool strictly mandates kids with cold symptoms stay home, even after a negative Covid test. Really not apples to apples.

What difference would it make if they take the masks off to eat and sleep and aren’t social distancing. Sounds like kids aren’t staying home when they are sick. Masks won’t fix that.

If these are colds, its due to parents sending their kids in sick and not being careful. And, the school and day care center not cleaning surfaces and supplies regularly.

Hire a nanny.
