U.S. Soccer Is Offering The Same Contracts For Its Men's And Women's Teams

Why not separate the USWNT from the USSF? Let USSF be all about males and have a new federation handle the females. What gives USSF a monopoly on soccer? I am seriously asking as I don’t understand the contracts, laws and regs on this.

The USSF has quite a few groups under the umbrella. What the USSF and everyone else knows is that the only constituent it has focused on and made happy is the MLS ownership group. So, bottom line, the USSF folds up and a new organization is put in place if it cannot make things right with women and youth soccer (and refs).

3. What does Nike do?
4. How do you divide up national training properties bought with Nike?
5. What do all sponsors do if they no longer have the women’s team?

8. What will the broadcast deals look like moving forward if no Womens World Cup as a draw.

Fails. If you can not paid your players a living wage what’s the point? The way to do a women’s league is to do it through establish clubs. It makes no sense to duplicate your facilities. The thing is MLS will never do it because they are afraid they will get sued if they do not put the same resources into each team. Like it or not the USWNT players are seen as players who will sue even after they have signed a contract. Sport ownership does not want to deal with that. In addition some teams/clubs are cheap…hello DC United!

The girls(or travel soccer coaches) and national team coach will be fine. Very few actually make a living from the nation team. The vast majority make money from the youth travel soccer.

3. What does Nike do?

They will continue to give their money. If USWNT separate they will make a deal with them.

4. How do you divide up national training properties bought with Nike?

Someone will buy them or rent it out. Again Nike does not give a lot of money and that money goes many places not just the USWNT team.

5. What do all sponsors do if they no longer have the women’s team?

They will stay for the men’s team. The USMNT will qualify for the WC this cycle. The coverage, TV rating and money will surpassed the women’s. Its not like the women are pulling in so much more money vs the men and the men did not even qualify for the last WC. Let compare years when both teams make the WC. The next WC after this will be in the US, Canada and Mexico. Sponsors will be throwing money at the USMNT.

Also Premier league Broadcast rights are up for bid this year. Comcast paid 150 million for them last time. They are projecting the next contract will be 2-3 billion with three major networks bidding for the rights(think it’s fox, NBC and ESPN). This will have a major impact on soccer in the US. When a network paid that much money they will market the F out of the premier league and soccer.

6. What will FIFA representation for the US look like?

As long as there is money FIFA will be there!

7. What will be the USOC position?

Their positions will be like all the other corporate interest. If there is no USWNT they will make one. Go get some women out of college and let them play. It’s a great model because you do not have to pay them. The USOC is about $$$$$.

8. What will the broadcast deals look like moving forward if no Womens World Cup as a draw.

About the same as it does now. The thing is USWNT is not about soccer. It is an event in this country about women empowerment. 90% of the views know nothing about soccer and do not care about soccer but like seeing the USWNT win. It validates them. There is enough money to keep the USWNT around but not enough interest in women’s soccer for NWSL. So the USWNT is not going anywhere.

Also your complaint about USSF and MLS are outdated.

Actually, it is 100% correct. That's the point of the lawsuit that got thrown out last year and they're keeping alive as bargaining chip in negotiations. There's no legal basis for USSF being required to pay that money to the women's national team. They'll never win unless they get an ignorant or partisan judge which they did not find in California last time.

You do a lot of BS in negotiations, but the women's team takes the cake in its disingenuous rhetoric. They're not victims. They sought a deal with fixed costs because they wanted that certainty. Now they also want all the bonuses that the men get w/o the same certainty. And then when the USSF calls their bluff and offers the same deal as the men and offers to pool prize money, they balk. They think social media will win this for them in court of public opinion. But USSF isn't dumb and it's not going to work.

Not sure what you mean. ESPN is the primary partner of MLS and doesn't air most of the men's teams games.

Women's soccer needs USSF. This would be like women's sports at colleges relying on their own revenue, when it's impossible. Nearly all sports rely on big money makers like football and basketball. Why can't they just make a contracts with % based on revenue earned? Are you doing to force the globe to watch and buy products supporting women's sports? Men make more revenue. How is this hard?

Not an easy problem. The problem is why do women earn less and generate less revenue. Is it because for years institutions such as NCAA and FIFA channel funds into development marketing and tv to male side of sport ? Think of it like a race: the male is given Nike flys custom fit, a nutritionist, elite coaching, and a 5 year head start. Who do you think will be ahead ??? That’s the revenue issue.
