trying to decide between Luxmanor vs Bannockburn

I’d. boose based on commute as all the schools you name are good, but, part of my commute consideration would be how certain are you to stay in these jobs (B-burn is likely the better option for commuting flexibility as it is closer to downtown dc plus much closer to northern VA), do you have telecommute flexibility, do you want to be nearish to metro (luxmanor prob not far from grosvenor).

Ok great thank you everyone for your input. Academically, are the schools similar? I have heard mixed things with some folks saying Whitman is significantly better then Johnson.

Anyone who thinks Whitman is *that* much better academically than Walter Johnson (or WJ, no one calls it Johnson) is out of touch with reality, a racist, or both.

WJ is a great school with more diversity than Whitman. “Better Academics” can be code for more white people, but you should check out the statistics and demographics yourself and decide what is important to your family.

It’s crazy to me as a parent in MCPS who also had friends, family, and colleagues in top privates in the DC area and elsewhere, how much energy is put into which “W” school is better when outside of Blair Magnets and RM IB, if you’re really interested in and able to position your kids for success, you go private locally or boarding school. MCPS parents fight over the table scraps.

Just a whole lot of My School boosterism. Makes them feel better. (Especially the private school parents. )

I am the poster above you who said I would pick based on commute since both schools are strong. My kids go to Whitman but I’d happily send them to WJ if we lived in that district (many other high schools in MoCo are strong, in not necessarily identical but all important ways, and regardless all high schools in MoCo use the same curriculum and offer much of the same classes).

The diversity in the WJ cluster starts at Luxmanor. We just finished at Luxmanor and started at Tilden and recommend it highly.

You can't go wrong with either school. In fact all schools and NCPS are remarkably similar in terms of what the child will learn.

Whitman is a much better high school and that neighborhood is less likely to be redistricted, so it seems like a clear choice to me if you’re prioritizing schools.

Also, Bannockburn is much closer to DC if that’s an issue for you.

Bumping this. Possibly moving into the Luxmanor neighborhood. Does anyone have any insight into this school? I tried calling the school to get more information, but they were not very helpful. It seems like the schools rankings have gone down over the years. Any advice?

I live in Chevy Chase and we know folks who live in both Luxmanor and Bannockburn. Their kids, like mine, are in college and grad school, and all these people seem quite happy with their kids' experiences at either WJ or Whitman. So, there's an anecdotal long-term perspective for you. One question I might ask is whether Luxmanor families can join the Tilden Woods pool. I know this might seem trivial, but DC summers are torrid, and you really want to have access to a pool. Both Tilden Woods and Bannockburn are fun pools with great summer swim teams. It's a nice way for kids to make friends and learn a lifetime sport.

Luxmanor is about as entitled as Whitman, so that's a wash!
